MR340 w/ Explorer II
MR340 w/ Explorer II
So…wore the Explorer during MR340 race - kayak ultramarathon - Kansas City to St.Luis.
Watch did not leave my wrist for 4 days.
Some would call this environment abusive.
Boats, ramps, rocks, concrete, sand, mud, water.
Slamming, bumping, scraping.
I also hit a bouy around 11pm Tuesday - had to be scariest thing I have ever experienced. It was only a minute or so of struggle, but it was physically intense. Probably as extreme as it gets for any watch.
Also burned ~9500 calories per day
Positive:
-legibility was superb. Time at a glance is absolutely critical for this sort of a race, and explorer delivered brilliantly. Day and night
-zero mechanical issues
-perfectly comfortable
Negative:
-sand/mud completely fucks up the clasp - opening/closing and half-link (use it when I sleep)
-micro adjustments - after mile 50 or so, my hands stated to slowly swell, and continued swelling the entire way. At mile 200, had to open the half link. Micro-adjust would be nice
-I know it’s not an sub, but a timing/rotating bezel would be tits. Measure hourly carb intake, electrolyte intake, hydration. When I paddle, it’s gets very rhythmic for 4-6hr sprints, and you need to keep track of intake intervals.
Few pics. Sorry they are all kind of the same, but thats the race… you pretty much spend 20-22hrs a day in your boat. Day 4 smell was amazing
Cheers

Re: MR340 w/ Explorer II
looks like a hell of a good time and good on you for using a tool watch as a tool
I'm guessing the narrow ones are fir speed while the wider ones are stability?

Re: MR340 w/ Explorer II
Excellent post & pics Tim, thanks for sharing. Looks like you had an epic trip.
Re: MR340 w/ Explorer II
Yep. Narrow boats are low stability, high speed.
Mine is an expedition/sea kayak. Kind of in-between
Trip was totally epic.

Very cool - thanks for sharing.
I'm wearing an Explorer II as I type this. Holding up well to my home office environment.

Nice to see an expensive watch get dirty. Post it on TRF. People will lose their minds.

I posted this picture on TRF a few years ago and people lost their minds.

Great story and pics
I can appreciate the notes on real-world use. I love it when dudes talk about how great their “tool” watches are, but have never so much as let a cat hair land on them…
When you put a watch to real use, you quickly find out how you would tweak the piece to serve your needs - good stuff!

Re: MR340 w/ Explorer II
i called out the site owner for doxing someone. temp ban for that one. then i got banned because i told the site owner that Grand Seiko won't fix something that can't be seen with the naked eye. i told him GS would tell him to "pound sand".JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 5:55 pmMe too. I called the site owner and the mods shills for DavidSW. Banned in a flash. Sorta proved my point.
i am sure right now they are banning me for posting this info.
edit: rolex is fucktards for not tightening up a caseback on a watch they were suppose to pressure test.

Boy oh boy Tim, that is incredible what you go through,
or went through. The way you talk about all
of it so calmly, and as if it is no big deal, and easy is just
amazing really. Wow, I am floored !
It looks like such an epic area too, and has to be just an
unforgettable time. And what better watch to do it with.
I mean the name of the watch says it all right?! And
even though it looks like you put it through the mill, it
looks like it really enjoyed it right along with you !!
Want to thank you for sharing all of this with us, and also
wish you a GIANT congratulations on all of this !!!
Incredible wrist shots by the way ! ..And you too Roger !
