What you got for <$1000?
What you got for <$1000?
Putting this here because time is of the essence.
Friend is a watch guy like us but never posts on the forums.
The general manager of his steakhouse came to me asking to find a watch with a $1k budget for his 50th bday which is less than two weeks away.
Would really like to get him an SBBN015 or a vintage bullhead. Maybe a 1971 seiko? Let me know what you have!
Might reach out to our favorite seiko AD to see what he has on Monday, but thought it would be a good idea to try here first.

IMO there is a lot of value in Longines at that price point. Especially if used is an option.

You didn't say what type of watch he's looking for. Diver? Pilot? Something else?
+1 for me on Longines, great watches at reasonable prices.
If he's looking for a pilot watch, I'd look at something like a Laco Westerland. A 45mm case for his large wrist size, ETA movement (hand wound, there's an automatic version if he prefers), One of the original B-Uhr manufacturers if he cares about such things. $1350.

Another options is Hamilton. Any Khaki Field would be nice.
I know a bronze watch is not for everyone, but the new bronze Khaki manual is less than $1,000.
Seiko SPB143 can also be bought for less than $1,000.

Longines, Oris, Seiko are all good options
Many will register, few will last
Re: What you got for <$1000?
Alpina diver and pilot models are good values, especially on the secondary market.
Birth year Seikos are generally easy to find. However, when you get into early '70's divers and chronos, which of course are going to be the larger models, the prices rise quickly.

Don't get used or vintage. That's more trouble than its worth especially if its a gift. I would hit up SeiyaJapan or Gnomon and get a nice Seiko Tuna. Decent battery life, durable, and a piece that is original
Re: What you got for <$1000?
Mido and Certina are two nice brands that come to mind in that range.

Willard?
Re: What you got for <$1000?
Turns out he wants a Hamilton khaki bronze even knowing it’s 38mm.
Question is now where to get a thin leather (roo leather) nato.

Re: What you got for <$1000?
If new, I would look at a Seiko Willard. If used is an option (or there might be some new ones kicking around on massive discounts) Eterna Kontiki is hard to beat. Last year, the 1973 Super Kontiki Re-issues were being blown out on Ashford. I've seen new Kontiki 4 hands go for $799 on blowout.
Re: What you got for <$1000?
I think given his wrist size, a new Tuna would be perfect although a new 300m is a little pricier. Green Willard is right around $1k.

Yeah — but that may fit just fine
Better than the other way around

He needs 45mm at least for an 8.5” wrist.
You can find some 44mm Breitlings for just over $1k. I second the Longines Diver if you can find one, but they’re usually around $1200. If he went up to $1500 or $2k, the options really open up…

See if Terry has any left in his strap closet. I have one of his ‘roo leather NATO’s and it is great on the Hamilton Khaki. Best pic I’ve got of it on the ‘roo, but you get the idea.
FWIW, Squale, Certina, Alpina, and Mido are also great suggestions.

Re: What you got for <$1000?
The bronze Hamilton khaki already comes on a leather calfskin nato. Is a ‘roo leather nato really that much better?

What a great strap site with tons of length options.
Got him a vintage green two piece which will work well on the bronze.
