Been on a bit of a Michael Connelly binge the last few weeks. My Mom got me the first book for Christmas and it has been siting around. I finally picked it up recently and blew right through it. I then figured I would start at the beginning of the Bosch novels. I just finished book 3 last night.

the late Henning Mankell (Inspector Wallander series) wrote some great police procedurals, like Bosch but even darker... another Swedish couple, Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, have a very good Inspector Martin Beck series, for fans of Scandinavian crime novels...

another favorite is Icelandic crime writer Arnaldur Indridason and his Inspector Erlendur series... good stuff

I'll check the couple you mentioned Peter..... I have read Mankell and Larssen..... for some reason I've never gotten through a Nesbo novel

What are you reading?

Post by Wario406 » Sun May 28, 2023 8:49 pm

We may not be beautiful but we’re smart. Everyone but Hoppy knows that.

Im reading Stephen Ambrose Undaunted Courage - what a moving book outlining early American history and the story of Lewis and Clark.

Ambrose does well with these..... a while back I read - Nothing Like It in the World - which was good. That was the basis for Hell on Wheels series.

I believe we’ve talked about Peter Egan, I’ve enjoyed his Road & Track columns since I was a kid. Due to my new found love of motorcycles I recently bought a book with all of his motorcycle columns. Good stuff.

my kindle list looks a lot different than most of yours. lots of scifi and horror. just finished reading "roadside picnic," a translation of an old russian book. it was the inspiration for an old computer game i played 15-20 years ago called "S.T.A.L.K.E.R."
Roadside Picnic is set in the aftermath of an extraterrestrial event called the Visitation that took place in several locations around the Earth, simultaneously, over a two-day period. Neither the Visitors themselves nor their means of arrival or departure were ever seen by the local populations who lived inside the relatively small areas, each a few square kilometers, of the six Visitation Zones. The zones exhibit strange and dangerous phenomena not understood by humans, and contain artifacts with inexplicable properties.

Red Schuhart is a stalker, one of those young rebels who are compelled, in spite of extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a “full empty,” something goes wrong. And the news he gets from his girlfriend upon his return makes it inevitable that he’ll keep going back to the Zone, again and again, until he finds the answer to all his problems.

Just finished this which I recommend highly to anyone here - the significance of the watch can’t be overstated in ocean navigation!
