Holy $#@&, I have permission!!

Post by goaliechris » Tue May 22, 2012 5:04 pm

So, my wife is tired of hearing me talk about what watch I want next - a pilot style chrono, something new, not vintage. And I asked her, well, can I buy it (smiling, knowing she will not approve):

Sure! she says.

What??? How much can I spend on this one?

Well, since you didn't get one when you turned 40 in Vegas, how about $9500? :o

...me hitting the floor....

After waking up, I am trying to organize my thoughts on what I should get. I have not purchased a watch in awhile and in fact have sold a few (a Deep Sea, Heuer Autavia, IWC Pilot Chrono Laureus edition) I love the new look of the IWC Spitfire and it's one of her favorites as well. She also liked the Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth and the Bremont Alt1-C with the grey dial. All of course, I like as well. This would be more of a casual watch with leather and maybe bracelet if it looks right. I have also thought about a Linde and VC but both might be out of my budget.

I don't need to spend that much to get the right watch but I have a pretty good budget to work within. I am excited to purchase a new watch as I haven't had the option to do so for awhile.

Anything you would recommend while I am still trying to collect myself?

By the way, my wife is the best.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

IWC.

It is the pilot watch.

Wow. I just tell my wife all of my watches cost $10. Yea, I tell myself that she believes that.

She is very cool but even I was shocked she went that high.

The new Spitfire is damn cool but lists at $10,700. Not sure you can get a good discount on such a new model.

Not sure I will spend that whole amount. I think $5k is about right to be honest. That's why I am thinking the Bremont or a IWC 3717-01.

I would bet someone here could point you in the right direction for a decent IWC discount.

If you want the Spitfire drop me a line. Who knows, I just might be able to get you into one for less than your limit...

If you can get the new Spitfire for under your budget, then I'd agree with all of the above. Definitely the one to get. If you decide to limit this purchase to the $5k you mentioned, then I think the Bremont is a very, very nice choice. Either way you're winning.

BUY SOMETHING QUICKLY!

I'd spend 10K outright. If you don't like it, you have plenty of time to break it up into smaller 'pieces' later.

Just my .02

Go under budget, unless something blows you away. Then get HER some thing nice.

Steven's good like that. ;)

IWC if it were my money. And if C-notes saves you some money for her, win-win.

Spend it all, and spend it quickly, is my advice. Plenty of great pieces in that price range.

Tried the new pilot chrono on yesterday. Very nice watch but, and maybe it was just this one, when depressing the chrono the hand wiggles a little and sort of moves back then forward. Just a tiny amount and not a big deal.

I did not get to try on the Spitfire so I didn't get to see the dial color in person or see how it operates.

So it's down between these two. Do I like the Spitfire twice as much as the the 3777 (close to the price difference)? Tough call but I think I might.

Not sure if this is working on my ipad so attaching photo and link. Thoughts?

I know, I've got the green light and I'm stalled at the line.

I'm okay with that - want to get this right.

This is normal for the 7750, and no, it doesn't affect the timing at all. In fact, this behavior is endemic to all lever-actuated chronographs. Since the new in-house chronograph is a column-wheel design, it won't jump when you start it.

By the way, that discussion on TZ regarding the IWC Cannes dinner is ridiculous. How many times have do people see a watch on tv or a movie and ask what is that? Get stars to wear your finely made watches and more people will see them. Then IWC has more sales, more money for R&D, etc.

Some people live in a strange fantasy land if they have a real problem with that event.

Yeah, we have a bunch of stick-in-the-mud traditionalists on TZ who seem to forget that in order for a business to grow it needs to market itself effectively. Sure, some the promotional stunts pulled by watch companies these days may seem crass to those of us who comprise the cognoscenti, but in truth we comprise a very small demographic. When you're trying to sell tens of thousands of luxury watches -- watches, I might add, that are outclassed in terms of accuracy and durability by a $40 Casio -- in an already crowded space, you've got to cast as wide a net as possible.

I'm not saying that it's a good thing, but it what it is.
