watch for my son
watch for my son
I would greatly appreciate your help. I am trying to purchase a dive watch for my son. He is in the Navy Underwater Medicine Program. He will be deploying with Fleet Marine at times also.
I would like to keep the price under $2000. He will probably be wearing this daily. He prefers a watch that is about 13 to 14mm in width with a swiss movement. I doubt he would be diving below 500metres but would like to look at a watch related to 1000metres if possible. He likes the brushed titanium look but quality and durability are certainly more of a factor.
I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Perfect. I was thinking UTS 1000m but I think the U1 would be better.
Congrats on your son and welcome to DWC.

brushed case and bezel - check
budget - check
durability - check x1000000
made out of sub-steel. probably the toughest, durable, badass, literally go anywhere, do anything watch.
instant legibility, swiss movement, built to extreme tolerances
looks good on ZULU, leather, rubber, bracelet

Sinn UX would fit the bill too. Perfect grab and go goodness in a COSC quartz package.

Congrats to you and your son.
Sinn U1 no doubt. Not sure what they run new these days, but you can find gently owned ones all the time for $1500 or less.

Here's a few practical choices...
Seiko MarineMaster 300M SBDX001

Seiko MarineMaster 300M SBBN015

Stowa Seatime ProDiver

Sinn U1, U2 or UX

A Titanium Seawolf is also a great choice.

I'll through a vote for the Sinn U1 or UX and add a used Omega SMP 2254 as an alternate.

Re: watch for my son
Ok let's quit messing around...good suggestions all, but here's the skinny on the U1.
The case is made of the same steel used on German Submarine hulls, providing a much higher tolerance to the corrosive effects of saltwater than 316 steel used in normal dive watches.
This steel is highly amagnetic, meaning it has a very low magnetic signature. That could be a benefit in certain dangerous underwater situations. A small perhaps insignificant benefit, but a benefit nonetheless.
The bezel is hardened to 3 times the norm for regular steel.
Sinn uses Top Grade ETA movements in all it's watches.
The bracelet is outstanding, and it rocks on a ZULU/NATO also.
The dial and hands make for an incredibly legible watch in the water or on land.
The 2824 movement can be serviced by any competent watch maker.
There are many good dive watches, including those suggested here. The Sinn U1 brings beneficial technology to the table, as well as a truly unique design.
You can google everything I mention above for verification and more info.
And I couldn't resist on more picture, this time with the bracelet.

Ill go against the grain here and suggest this.

Warslug, this is that seller's only post. Be cautious and do your homework. U1's are always FS, you needn't rush to buy this one.

The Sinn is a great watch, but doesn't have a HRV - or Helium Release Valve, which as a Military Diving Doctor he will probably need.... Under $2,000 I would say a used Seiko Marine Master. It doesn't have a HRV (doesn't need one it has special o-ring gaskets) and is Japanese, but it is a serious diving instrument.

Isn't the HRV just window dressing anyways?
BTW - the MM300 doesn't need the HRV, it contains an internal L-shaped gasket design that makes this a “saturation diver” (helium gas diver) watch.

Hmmm.. I'd quibble with the 'he will probably need' the HRV.TKite wrote:The Sinn is a great watch, but doesn't have a HRV - or Helium Release Valve, which as a Military Diving Doctor he will probably need.... I'd say 99.9% of Navy DMO's DON'T conduct any saturation dives. Those that do work at NEDU or support SAT/FADs projects and don't wear watches in those complexes.
I could be wrong, though..
