I bought my wife the quartz Aqua Terra and she won't wear it to the beach.

Full on egg head corporate job and I fly quite a bit so I'm really looking forward to adding to my collection of TSA friendly self defense tools. I have amcouple tactical pens, but I want to up the game and get into some custom stuff. Been watch obsessed for a while but this seems more fun.
Thanks for letting me play! "

With new seals, a new-ish crystal and a recent pressure test, you're good to go. The metal doesn't care when it was machined. I'd trust an old Submariner in the water more than most brand-new watches. Hell, you don't even need a diver's model; I swim/shower with my 50m-rated plexi GMT often.Expat wrote:All this "don't swim with vintage", " be careful with that", "better get a boutique diver for real swimming" I mean come on, its a Rolex Sub. 32 years young. You guys are just silly. I knew it would be fine.

Yeah I did the same thing to my wife when I bought her a Marcello C NettunoJBZ wrote:I bought my wife a vintage datejust for Xmas a couple of years ago. I never mentioned the screw down crown to her. She kept bringing it to me to set the time, until I finally asked her why she wasn't doing it. She said that she couldn't figure out how to pull the crown out and didn't want to force it. It had never even occurred to me to mention it. I had become so used to screw down crowns that I forgot that a lot of watches don't have them, particularly quartz watches (and she had a pretty nice Raymond Weil before I bought her the Rollie).
At least she didn't try to force it. If you're reading this honey, I love you!

Re: You guys are so silly..
I don't know about this whole screw down crown / water resistance debate. I'm of the opinion Bill's watchmaker might be correct (if only partially).
My only experience with this is with a Momentum dive watch (200 meter rated) I purchased for my wife a few years ago. For some reason the crown on that thing would not stay screwed down for her. Eventually the watch flooded (no diving - the only time the watch got wet was pool / ocean swimming and bathing our kids).
Momentum's warranty policy is to pressure test the returned watch with the crown screwed down. If it passes, you are liable for the damages (which, to Momentum's credit, was pretty reasonable). Her flooded watch passed with the crown screwed down.
My theory (again - could be totally wrong on this) is the crown threads provide some level of compression to the seals causing them to become more effective. Also, my suspicion is while the tube seal does provide water resistance even while the crown is extended, the longer stem has some lateral play when bumped or nudged by the wrist which could allow water past that seal.
I know there are highly water resistant watches without threaded crowns and that there are differing crown tube / pendant designs, but my practice is, the manufacturer put a threaded crown tube on the watch for a reason. You should use it.

Re: You guys are so silly..
I once forgot to screw down the crown on my old Citizen Aqualand and flooded it with deionized water at work. I pulled the back and stuck it in a Tupperware container with a few bags of desiccant and it worked and passed pressure for many years after that. Love the watch. It's finally retired to being a plain old watch since it's so hard to get seals now. It needs a good refurb...
