New dress watch......

Post by Zonda » Mon Jul 08, 2013 5:55 am

I'm looking for a watch in the classic style of this IWC, with the lumed candlestick hands and small lume dots on the major indices.

I have been fruitlessly searching the web for a new mechanical quality watch. Before I jump in and buy the only one I found, I was hoping the that the forum members may know of a company that makes this style of watch.

So far my search has lead me to "Junkers" and this model, which is very close to the design, except i don't want a day/date display, but could live with it....

A Max Bill Automatic may satisfy your quest. Otherwise, I'd ask what size you are looking for. Lots of smaller vintage pieces are available. Check Chrono24.

You're welcome. Max Bill watches are 20th century design icons in the Bauhaus mode.

Another watch in a similar style is the Laco Vintage:

No lume, though.

Check out Longines. They have some pretty cool heritage stuff.

If you're new to mechanical, I'd probably skip vintage and go for vintage styling.

Nothing wrong with starting at vintage, but they're not as resilient as modern watches.

Actually this is the very reason I'm looking for a "new" watch, I have several vintage watches and I'am not confident with there water proof, reliability and ruggedness (resilience) for everyday casual wearing.

So the hunt is on for suitable replacements in the same style with modern engineering and reliability.

Don't get me wrong all of the classic/vintage watches are great and most likely just as reliable, it's just the worrying feeling I get when wearing some of them, much like "did I leave the car unlocked" as you get on the commuter train to work!! :raised:

Longines was a great recommendation for a new watch with the vintage styling and solid reputation.

It is not exactly what you are looking for, but the new Hamilton Intramatic is gorgeous and very affordable.

The Max Bill was the right call, but if we are recommending stuff with no lume, I'll throw NOMOS out there. In-house movement at a reasonable price, and very well done. I have a long review here of my Tangomat Datum.

This is slightly off topic as you are looking for something bigger and newer - I just thought it was really cool ;) http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-vin ... 86516.html

Great choice with the Max Bill; you can't beat the original. It's encouraging that they left out the date window and kept the size semi-reasonable on the modern version. That'll go with just about anything and it's trend-proof. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
