Sunday Dive: 24-03-2013 - Kwinana - Orient Ray

Post by bedlam » Sun Mar 24, 2013 12:10 am

Diving under the grain terminal jetty near Kwinana in West Oz. Visibility was 6m (crap) but there are tons and tons of tiny orange sea slugs (nudibranchs). They are adorable little tykes and a favourite of lots of divers. There was a crab v octopus event which the crab regrets, some cuttlefish and tons of sponge garden. Nice dive in 21c water and very little current but a little surge (underwater waves pushing you back and forth).

I took the Orient Ray. Its a solid little watch with a very classy bezel. In fact I'd claim it to be the best bezel around in the lower end price range. The dial readability is very good. The hands are easy to see and a good length. The screw-down crown is serviceable but a little gritty. It also has that spare time knob (which changes the day), extra time knobs of course are always a good thing! I have it on the same 22mm Orient dive strap used with the OS300. The Ray was comfortable on the wrist and a perfect case size at 42mm. I actually think the Ray is a good update of the venerable Mako design and one of the best automatic beaters around. Its also an excellent real world dive watch for not much coin.

Beautiful, man!
You had made me miss diving, which I can't do anymore.
Thanks for the write up and bravo on the Oriet, looks like a great choice for a dive

I'm doing a night dive tomorrow...which I don't really have the camera kit for but will have a try at some pics anyway.

Wow Carl, can only imagine how fun this must be !

I know it's always terrific getting the chance to see the pictures. Don't even
recognize most of those creatures really with their alien like ways. So cool
sir ! Those orange sea slugs even look like they could come from a video game,
or something. Thank you very much for showing all of these like this. Really
appreciate it.

P.S. Great seeing that Orient too ! Really does seem like an outstanding bezel
on it. The entire watch looks outstanding actually.

Nice. So what's the depth? Similar but different to what we have here. Very cool to see, and those Orange slugs are bad ass.

Depth was shallow, 11-12m. There is a drop-off a bit further out but there's nothing interesting to make it worthwhile. The interesting stuff is in the first 30m most of the time.

One thing I would say about the Ray is it has awesome lume. In this pic I am under a dark part of the jetty with a spot of sunlight hitting the area where I was that is lighting up the brand text on my glove, but the lume on the indices isn't washed out at all. I was quite impressed.

Great dive journal as always. And with a Ray to boot. I've just got one myself, what a fantastic watch for the price, and it's a good thing to see these watches being used for what they were designed for. I'm glad they updated the Mako (into the Ray) by taking away the numerical markers.

I much prefer the indices over numerals too.
