Your thoughts and opinions on the Debaufre Triton...

Post by Ditchdoc » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:44 am

Hi guys, I just wanted to get some of your opinions on the Defaubre Triton. I just purchased one on impulse at a great deal on WUS and realized I don't know a lot about this brand/model other than it looks cool and has an ETA 2824 movement. So if you own one, have owned one in the past or even touched one, please let me know your thoughts on this watch. Pics would be awesome. Thanks.

None specifically with the Triton. There are people here with some Triton experience. I have had excellent dealings with their customer service as a 2nd owner of one of thier GMT Ocean 1s-it was a steinhart right after they merged or bought out or whatever. It was a decent watch as well. They were very good to deal with and in the end I got a new watch out of the deal vs them fixing my old one.

Hi Ken,
I had one for a while. It was the newest model with the round date hole and ss
bracelet. DeBaufre' kind of in a round about way branhced off of Steinhart. DeBaufre'
is the American side. They are/were an independant company. Af far as I know they are
completely built in Switzerland, though I've heard people claim different.
I liked mine alot, but it was just a little too big for my tastes. I tended to bump it on things
quite a bit. It has SPECtacular Lume, and was very accurate. It's also a HEAVY watch, you'll
never forget your wearing it. It has a pretty neat caseback on it too. The older models have
the Square date window and from what I've gathered from other owners, the Lume isn't as good,
or colorfull.
I sold mine because it wasn't getting a lot of wrist time, for the reasons listed about, and I had
a friend who really wanted it, so off it went.
Here'a a few pictures of mine along with some on a couple of different straps.
Regards Sonny

Actually this is what Gunner from Steinhart had told me about there relationship with Debaufre. He said there isn't one at all due to differences. Now there watches are produce by the same people for now but that is the extent of it.
I have had excellent service form Gunner but I can't say the same for Debaufre lately. And the way I was told is all the watches in the past have been designed by Steinhart so who knows what is to come of Debaufre in the future.
I personally haven't owned a Triton but I have held one and it wasn't what I want but it is a very unique watch.
Enjoy your purchase, Terry

Wow! thanks for the comments. Actually I had heard rumors of some sort of a steinhart / debaufre merger but didn't know the particulars. I love the way it looks on the brown strap Sonny. I think I purchased the older model with the square date which is unfortunate because I'm a lume freak but hopefully it will be okay. I like the way the newer model outlines the date in orange. pretty cool! Can't really go wrong for $250 though. Thanks again .

Here is what I found on WUS "All Steinhart watches are designed in Germany by Steinhart. The watches are then swiss made & then shipped back to Steinhart for the final process of assembling & completion. For a small operation Steinhart do a mountain of work.

Steinhart & Debaufre used to be affiliated but this has ceased. The left over Steinhart DNA/designs Debaufre use(d) will soon for the most part also cease. Some small elements of design may continue but overall the collaboration is over."

I would pimp that watch for 250 for sure.

WOW........250.00!!!!! I'd buy another for that amount for sure! I got mine unworn for 600, which at
the time was about 140 less then one shipped. The bracelet raised the price by 100.00. Unfortunantly
the bracelet doesn't retrofit the older model, but I think it looks better on a strap anyway.
Both of the straps I had on mine came from Stan at panatime. I think the lighter one is called Antique Vintage
or something like that. Heck of a strap for well under 40.00 shipped. Of course as always excellant service from
Stan.
If you like big watches you'll love it. I don't think the older lume is that much less then the newer one, just
slightly. I think you'll be very pleased.......especially at 250.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regards Sonny

Only reason why I know this is because Debaufre pissed me off about parts for one of my watches and Steinhart was the only one who addressed the issue. So I did a little research to see if they were really 2 different companies or not. They definitely are now but at one time they weren't.

Sorry to mess up your post!

I had two but down to just one. I had the black dial version first. Had an opportunity to get the orange dial, so I flipped the black one. Here's a pic of my one and only Debaufre...

Steinhart was/is the same company as Robert watch the old ebay brand. Debaufre name came about due to some US copyright/patent laws with Steinfart name, yada yada. They have now split which is funny since neither actually makes watches, they order them pre made, and the Triton was may be the only non homage they sell... so what now they aren't allowed to order their homage pieces from the same chinese factory, wtf both marketing companies will still sell the same homage ordered from same factory with different dials.? . Swiss made on the dial .... just like a swiss made Invicta, well hell it says it on the dial... that is not to say that for the used prices they are not decent bang for the buck. Handled a few and they are decent. Owned the Triton and I liked it, lume stunk on dial, it was a bit too flat on the wrist crystal and bezel all even and flat... kinda looked funny when I would look down at it on my wrist. Bezel was sloppy and I just hate that and can't keep a watch that wiggles and jiggles both back and forth and also the entire bezel was loosy goosy.

All in all not a bad watch and certainly I have owned much worse. For less than 3 bills it is decent, about consistent as the forum brands $500 chinese divers divers that everyone loves ... and then flips.

Now the new Triton certainly looks really good and I would love to handle that one in person., but can't get over the orange circle on dial. Why did they have to do that.... Damn Swiss makers!

The Orange dial version looks pretty good. I still like the Triton better than a Sumo, Deep Blue catalog, or the Megaladon for what it is worth.
