Hard to know where to begin. Business practices aside, the guy only makes copies of other peoples watches. So you do an entire interview about his design prowess? Hes a 'design' guy? Oh, yeah, and he thinks all Rolexes are "eh" in person...

He is an oxygen thief.

I will say his watches are a cut above many of the other "homage" brands. Same goes for when he was making parts to modify Seiko and ETA2824-2-based watches. Definitely made to a higher standard than the offerings from the other vendors.

That said, I can't imagine putting down a deposit to be some kind of nonsensical "plank owner", and wait years for the homage watch to be delivered. Used is the way to go.

----Yao’s watchmaking legend was born. Nobody beats Rolex when it comes to prestige and brand power — nobody. But Yao, the one-man watchmaker working out of a little shop in Wayne, Pennsylvania, gave them a run for their money.----

So I read the whole article and I learned that his “strength” is watch design.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t he just copy someone else designs for the most part?

If so, then my strength is also watch design...

Clearly, his real strength is in writing a press release.

and LoL at the Tudor BB being "an homage to his homage..."

Has to be a sponsored post, I don't understand how these articles get released he's no doubt a connected guy but seriously how does nobody ask him any questions about the project 300.

"Black Bay, that looked suspiciously like an homage of Yao’s homage"

That's my favorite part

these sites have so little integrity at this point, it's hard to bother to do much more than go there to see if they have better pictures of something new. i rarely bother to read them. i don't expect to see any unbiased reviews or interviews. so many legit questions here that could have even been "softballed" but were just ignored.

I don't get the whole "MKII build quality is head and shoulders above the rest" argument. I've owned an MKII watch. I've owned a Steinhart watch. Build quality/finishing were comparable. MKII isn't doing anything special compared to other homage companies in the same price range (or less). They just take longer to deliver and have their followers drinking the "it's because of Bill Yao's superior quality control" Kool-Aid. Meanwhile their endlink fit sucks.

This is an actual interview question:

"It’s clear to me that you’re understanding design language at a different level than most of us are. It’s almost like you’re seeing with X-ray vision."

I'm seeing this as a backhanded compliment... By my logic- if his strength is in design and he copies other's designs, therefore he has no real strength.

Maybe the whole article is a practical joke on Yao. Either that, or it's a practical joke on the rest of us.

Gear Patrol should be named Douche Patrol.

Speaking of Tudor, the first reply in this thread really made me understand the cult of MKii.

for the bland, boring and uninspired watches he makes, you think he could churn out many of them.....
