How come no love for the Datejust II?

Post by hobbit712 » Thu Nov 12, 2015 2:24 pm

I have seen this a few times in person and was really struck by the size, simplicity and elegance of it. No it's not a dive watch but it sure is purdy!

Anyone have one? What are your thoughts? I would have to have a huge sell off to justify it. Maybe a nice used one. Hmmmmmmmm........8-)

I love it. Rolex purists scoff at the size, as if it was 47mm.

Blue dial/smooth bezel is a great all around piece. Just doesn't stand up to the current sport watch lineup.

it's out of proportion & unattractive, IMHO .

The Datejust II and Day-Date II have way too much bezel and look bloated to me, but the 40 mm Day-Date is a significant improvement in proportions. Wait for the 40 mm update to the oversized DJ, which will also have the 3235 movement, which is already in current production for the blinged-out Pearlmaster 39.

On the other hand, it's still a steel Rolex, so it's essentially free to wear when bought secondhand and looked after decently. Plus, Quality > Quantity.

I have come close a couple times to getting the blue stick dial. I like both the white gold and steel bezel versions and will probably have one at some point, but I got waylaid on the way there earlier this year when I picked up Mike's white dial Daytona and liked it more than I thought I would.

I do like them a lot and think they're a great all-rounder for the one watch guy. Come to think of it I love my ND version with lightning bolt a ton! ;)

41 mm, but wears like a UFO. There are a few in the office, and they're not exactly the most subtle of watches.

I personally don't like any watch with a cyclops, but otherwise it looks nice.

I tried that one on a few months ago. For MSRP I was underwhelmed. For about $3500-4000 I am in. The one is replaces is just too small imo. This one is sized right.

My thoughts as well. I owned one and really liked it. Flipped it, like everything else I have ever owned, but wore really well. I would own one again.

Never sen one in person. As said, lots of people don't like the proportions. Dial looks huge in pictures I've seen. Plus, still not a fan of the PCLs.

I think the PCLs work really well with the fluted bezel. Less so with the smooth bezel.

Always thoughts the DJII looked oddly proportioned until I tried on a friends blue dial with sticks. It's far nicer on the wrist than expected and the blue dial is amazing.

I love it and it's on the short-ish list. Just way too much stuff before it and at $5500 new from a forum dealer it's a little spendy for something I may not wear all that much.

It's too large, and let's be honest...in any iteration, it's really kind of boring.

39-40 would be the sweet spot. A little too shiny for me. I need to go try on the new OP though.

This. Any date just (and day date, imo) will always feel like a watch for my dad's friends, not mine.
