Oak & Oscar in the metal...

Post by bzabodyn » Fri Aug 14, 2015 1:38 pm

So, yesterday while Chase (the owner/founder/etc) of Oak & Oscar was in Texas while spending some time with his wife's family, we were able to sneak away and spend some time talking watches and particularly diving into his first creation - the Burnham. I was among the first group of buyers to jump on board once the watch was announced - a lot of the reason being supporting someone like Chase on his new endeavor, but also because I just liked the watch, period. Regardless of how many great photos of the watch are floating around Instagram, it's still not the same as holding it in your own hands, seeing it with your own eyes, and strapping it to your wrist.

Image

All the little details and nuances of the watch drew me in from the begging - the sandwich dial with unique numerals, the matching date wheel (on a grey dial watch) and the perfect modern proportions. The size at 42mm with 22mm lug width it really the sweet spot for my wrist and it fits wonderfully on the wrist. The horween leather strap is one of the most comfortable I've ever worn and it being non-tapered it helps balance the watch perfectly. It's also great on the one off navy with orange stitching Zulu strap it also comes with.

Image

I already have a couple other cool straps from Art and Drew that I know will look good on it also  I didn't get a good shot of the leather watch roll that comes with it but trust me - there may be done in the market that are hundreds and hundreds of dollars but none are done as nicely and thoughtfully as this one - different size slots, strap and tool slots, completely tweed lined, staggered slots on opposite sides - just like everything Chase has done, so many little things that go above and beyond.

Ultimately, it's not every day you get to hang out with the man behind the brand and to top it off, get to try out ALL THREE prototype watches and get to pick the brain that made the decisions into every single detail that went into producing a new watch. Definitely a first for me. After yesterday, I feel I definitely made the right decision in putting my money where my mouth is and supporting Chase and what Oak & Oscar stands for

I met Chase at the Bremont event at Sydel and Sydel last year - really nice guy; coordinates a sort of Downtown Chicago Red Bar group (much swankier than our 'burbs version!) This watch has several cool design elements on the dial - like the way the circle on the end of the second hand frames the "O" in Oak once per minute.

Terry, I've been just chatting with him on IG and texts like we've been friends forever and I've only known him a few months. He's just that kind of guy. He's been doing somewhat of a world-wind tour around the U.S. and I was going to help organize something when he came to Texas to visit family and unfortunately couldn't make their GTG Thursday night so we just met up to grab coffee and shoot the shit for a couple hours.

I've gotten to see a couple things no one else has up to this point and all I'm going to say is he isn't no one-trick pony. He's in it for the long haul and isn't going anywhere.

I hadn't even heard of the brand until it was mentioned somewhere here in the last few days. Your post prompted me to check out his website. Really impressed with all aspects of this watch, including that horween watch roll.
Very nice start for Oak & Oscar, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on their development.
Thanks for sharing this, Brandon.

I really like this watch. It's like a somewhat more affordable Tudor Ranger.

Agreed. After I made my comment I remembered I have the Ranger and realized this would be too similar. It's nice for 2/3 the cost of a Ranger.

That's interesting. When I first saw this model I never considered a similarity to anything like the Ranger, but now that you've suggested it, I like that vibe with this watch. It does have that no-frills, field watch appeal.

Pat was a groupie for Hall & Oates back in the 80's. They knew him as Becky. Pat said Oates' mustache tickled.

It was a long time ago.
