Ok Dudes, you've got to help me out here: backpack for K...

Post by Sidheguitarist » Sun Mar 15, 2015 12:49 pm

So, my wife wants me to score her a small backpack. What she wants: something very similar to my saddleback messenger bag, only in heavy canvas (she doesn't like the fact that my fully-crammed saddleback weighs slightly less than the cow it came from), with backpack straps (obviously).

I've been through the first suspects that come to my own mind (eg. filson) and have done what I could to google though epic waves of imported white noise when it comes to bags, to no avail.

One of you gear heads will have the answer, I'm sure of it.

Ideas?

TIA,
-MM

How much do you want to spend?

As a potential suggestion, LL Bean makes a few styles of canvas / classic style day packs. They are run about $150.

I don't have that particular model, but my Osprey is at least 10 years old and has been around the world with me, and is still in great shape. It is my travel backpack, and I don't go on an airplane without it.

This. Mine is about 5 y.o. always with me when I travel.

I didn't even realize Filson made a backpack. New model? Bought the wife a saddleback. She hated it because of the weight.Replaced it with a filson tote which she loves, except for the fact she can't wear it like a backpack or cross body

^^This. Defy has great stuff for her.

I have a Defy canvas and it's awesome. That said, I just bought a GoRuck Echo pack today. :)

Michael,
Did you get something?

I have been impressed by this company's offerings...though I have yet to sample the goods. One thing is certain, Kay would have a unique bag.

^^^I like to Topo stuff a lot in pics, although I've never actually handled any of it. The prices are good for what look like quality, made in the USA, items.

That's good looking stuff, BD. Thanks for posting! I'll definitely be poring through their website.

Also found timbuk2 http://www.timbuk2.com/laptop-backpacks ... 4&start=23

But nothing ticks the "buy" box yet; she's surprisingly picky for someone who married a guy like me.

fwiw, i really like the tumi t-tech backpack i use for work daily. it's not "small," but it's a little smaller than a standard backpack, i can squeeze my 15.4" laptop in there, it's well made, and pretty comfortable when i'm traveling.

the one i bought isn't on their site any more, but they have a whole bunch of different packs. and tumi makes good luggage/travel gear.

I've been using timbuk2 messenger bags for about 10-15 years. I have a large and a medium. They wear like iron. The only visible wear on my 8 year old medium bag is where Stevie chewed one of the buckles. It still works fine, though.
