hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
i was a little disappointed in the live wrist shots of this. i definitely think the original dial looks better. more balanced. i think the proportions are better. maybe i'm overthinking it, but it kind of seems like a sea of black there in comparison.

It's a classic dial face.
Love the chrome outlined triangular markers, like on the Eternas - Four Hands, Kontiki 20, etc. Nice. Timeless.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
leaves me meh as well. I think I'd like it more at a $500 price point, but even then I'd probably go with a Squale over this.
Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
i realize that. i'm holding this exact seawolf model watch in my hand when i look at the pics from hodinkee. but when they scaled the case size up, the proportion of the full dial size to the markers changed. and something about it just doesn't seem to work as well for me. like i said, i may be overthinking and maybe looking at more pictures later will make me feel differently. but something about that first pic i posted just doesn't do it for me.hazmatman wrote:It's a classic dial face.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
taking another look at it, maybe some of it is the proportion of the text zodiac to the size of the logomark. i don't know. but something feels off to me proportion-wise.

I like it. Here's hoping the street price is better than the $1K estimate mentioned.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
Here's another wrist shot. I wrote the Hodinkee review. Let me know if you have other questions. I still have the watch.
The date was a lousy addition....
I don't mind the size. In fact, I quite like the watch, but the addition of the date ruins the dial IMHO.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
Do you have more shots of the other dial and bezel combos?
Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
So is there a bakelite style bezel for that one too? I'm really starting to like this one.

Send it my way Jason! ;-)
The size of the vintage was always tough to do today. Yes, the new one is bigger, but I think it is a nice contemporary re-issue. I will grab one.

Glad they increase the size to 39mm had a older Zodiac same case as the 34mm diver but GMT only reason I got rid of it was the size to small. What's the depth rating and Jason when is Zodiac going to start selling them.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
I'd prefer it with no date, but I still like it as is.
Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
You can get a vintage one with out date they all ways pop up on ebay but the 34mm case mite change your mind and get the new 39mm date version.jswing wrote:I'd prefer it with no date, but I still like it as is.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
the original vintage seawolf is 35mm, but i doubt that 1mm will make much difference to anyone who doesn't want to wear small vintage watches.
for the vintage, no date is actually preferable, since one of the issues people have with these movements is one of the parts for the date wheel is notoriously difficult to find when it breaks and this part has a history of breaking.
it's starting to grow on me a little again, but i'm still feeling like the proportions on the dial are off a little.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
Roger Ruegger took a photo of an earlier prototype, showing one of the other styles:
Not sure if a no-date version is planned.
I enjoyed wearing this watch way more than I thought I would. It felt like a vintage piece in all the right ways. Would I pay $1,000 for one? Maybe not. $700 on a strap? Probably. All speculation until Zodiac releases the watches and I'm not sure when that is going to happen. Must be soon since the version I got felt pretty well complete. Other than that clasp...
I also have the vintage version pictured in the article and it's awesome. 35mm doesn't bug me, especially on a NATO strap. And I got it for $400, in very good condition.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
Good article Jason. I like that one a lot. Although I prefer no-dates too the date window of the new Sea Wolf breaks up the symmetry that might be overwhelming with four lumed triangles.
only accurate watches are interesting
Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
if you got that white dial for $400 and the movement is in good shape, that's a helluva deal. i think my black dial was around $400 after servicing and a little restoration, but i took some risk buying on ebay and knowing it needed servicing. i love the bakelight bezels and would have paid a bit more to get one.
here's mine.

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
Actually think these look fantastic Greg !
For the most part it sounds like everything stayed very similar to your original except for the
move from 35 mm, to 39 mm, and use of Superluminova on the markers right sir?!
Guess I'm just glad that Zodiac is making these. Thanks a lot Greg !
Love the vintage ones though. Beautiful sir !
Thanks very much for your info as well Jason !

Re: hodinkee on the zodiac seawolf
Looks like a well done reissue to me. The date wheel being black was a smart move by Zodiac as it helps to retain the original look.
What I enjoyed most in the article was the picture of Jason wearing it as intended... diving. Pretty cool shot.
