"Flat 4" "MK1" "Unpolished"

Post by bzabodyn » Wed Mar 26, 2014 7:32 am

Some buzz words for you to give away what I pulled the trigger on (see thread below) - I have a good buddy that is a pawn broker and if any of you remember from a couple years back I had the opportunity to pick up this watch from him from a massive collection he was helping a guy cull out a few pieces - I bought an IWC BP instead and he picked up this. I've been lusting over it ever since and when I went in yesterday to look for a pocket knife for a gift (he's a Benchmade and HK dealer) he was wearing a T dial, J serial 243 so I told him he should be over this and can let it go. I also told him I want first dibs on the 243 since I let mine go to Carlos (craustin).

It's the first batch of LV Subs w / MK1 dial (oval "O" in Rolex) and flat four on a lighter green colored bezel. It shows a good amount of wear but it's completely unpolished and never been serviced so I get to take care of it as I wish. The case back sticker is worn but still intact even.

I'm very happy with it even though I might not get to wear it for a while - it'll come back on a black bezel and the original will get put up for safekeeping (since it's worth probably a grand by itself).

That is a great score. I figure that one will become highly collectible over time.
cheers,

Keith

I agree. I'd get a service replacement green insert and stick that flat 4 in a box. Is your watch a Y Serial by any chance? If so, that's a primo score from a collectability perspective.

Not just Y but Y03 which is the undisputed first batch. Going to get it serviced and send bracelet to Michael Young as it's pretty rough.

Upon actually taking possession it turns out it us an F03 serial which dates it to Nov '03 which is still considered the first initial run. It went in to the spa today so can't wait to get it back soon.

Honestly, I'd leave the bracelet alone if you're interested in the collector value.

Congrats Brandon!
You are on some serious Rolex kool-aid lately.
Thank God they don't sell it around here or I'd be in trouble

What a great find bro. Congrats. Yeah, you might want to let the bracelet stay as-is from a collector standpoint, but I'm no collector expert.

Too late - I shipped it to Michael Young over a month ago. Watch head should be back from service in the next week or so also. I figured it's too new of a watch to worry about keeping it all original - I'd rather do a light polish and be able to fix the bracelet and have a "new" watch. I do like being able to make that decision though.

I'm also swapping the bezel for an aftermarket LV bezel to save the original - those flat four ones are hard to find and big bucks.

It comes out every now and then but it's in such good shape I don't want to screw it up. I was thinking about possibly selling it and a couple others (16800 and a couple cheapies) to clean out the box and maybe get another AP - but I just can't get myself to do it. I bought it from a friend and he'd kill me too...
