Non-functional HEV

Post by Jcp311 » Mon May 19, 2014 4:01 pm

Has anybody heard of boutique divers using (perhaps unknowingly) non-functional/ fake HEV's? There's some guy over on WUS who says he discovered the HEV on one of his boutique divers was missing a spring, or something. He claims this lead to the WR being compromised.

Any thought? Suspects?

He hasn't said which brand it was, but I have my suspicions.

I've heard of that, but never heard of them missing springs, just that they are "dummy" ones which is false advertising.

I recall Shane DeLaurian having a boutique watch and discovering a fake HEV. He didn't want to "out" the brand because he liked they guy or something like that. I think the mods locked it down.

Another reason to only deal with reputable micros (like our fellas here).

Guessing Fullswing or other catalogue companies could use them and nobody would ever know otherwise. Has anybody seriously ever saturation dived with a catalogue case micro?

I find HEV's worthless for the 99.9% of people, even divers. I'd much prefer if most dive watches (think any Omega) eliminated them.

I prefer to buy watches without HEV.
Fewer parts = fewer chances of issues. Simple is better.
Plus I have no use for it
And HEV often means very high WR which also translates into unecessary case thickness which I don't like most of the time

Are HEV's useless? Mostly...I've seen blog posts here and there about mixed gas surface diving becoming more "popular." I doubt however that even among rec divers it will ever become a thing.

That said if a dive watch micro or not has an HEV it should work.

It only took you 8 Pelagos to figure this out.

I agree, if a watch has a valve it ought to work.

I'd think mixed gas diving wouldn't require the use of an HEV, unless the diver was really deep and spending time in a bell - but I'm no expert.

I'd love to know the pressure testing standards for a lot of the micros as well. Some I wouldn't question, like SAS and Aegir, but some of the others...

Not that I'd ever need it, but I see it as false advertising if the testing isn't legit.

I also always wonder about HEV and / or HRV function. Some of them automatically work, and some of them need to be activated by turning the crown, if I am not mistaken. And I don't think many divers really ever dive that deep.

I totally agree, less parts and functions, less possibility of malfunctions.

Here's the original post

"When I said ''most watches'' I should have said many micro brand watches. Water infiltrated 2 watches from the same boutique brand. Upon opening and inspecting the HV and gasket had a poor fit, letting water and forming condensation inside the watch. I also found that the HV had no spring to ensure the valve returns to it's initial position, therefore if it would need to release from a he buildup, it would not have returned. As for high end watches testing their HV, just do a google search and you will find the info on the tests performed…Finally rolex and omega, I don't think any explaining is needed, you probably already know their history regarding their HV performance."

If I ever found out my boutique divers with hev's were just for show I'd sell them tomorrow. :cussing:

I don't know about you guys, but I find an HEV indispensable.

They're mostly fine on a Rolex, and totally ugly on an Omega. The manual wart implementation is horrid IMO.

Point taken, but the principle remains. Don't lie to me about what I'm buying.
