Need a new wallet. Suggestions? * Got One! *

Post by mfxr » Tue Apr 23, 2013 9:22 pm

Ok it is long overdue, so I need a new wallet.
My main requirement are:

Slim
Probably leather, conventional folding style, flat bill
zip compartment (or very secure section)
Some credit card slots
Not too expensive, (maybe less than $150 as a guide)
vendor must ship internationally (Australia)

Do not want coin compartment or middle foldout bit, as this would impact on the prime directive of being slim.

Thanks

I recently (about a month) got one from Greg Stevens and I love it.

This one made out of Horween with an English tan bridle leather lining.

Leather looks nice, but the design is maybe too minimal inside. Was this a custom order?
I have added some refinements to my OP also.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Only thing that was custom was the inside lining as usually they are unlined .

Bellroy make a few models that might suit, and they are based in Melbourne too.

I recently bought a Tumi wallet. Very happy with it. I think they make a good product for a reasonable price and their wallets seem rather resistant to abuse.

For what it's worth, I think zippers on a wallet are a bad idea. Plus they don't exactly help out with the slimness thing.

The one Don posted looks like the perfect wallet, though. Nothing can fall out once it's folded over, the quality looks great, it's made of leather that will look better with age, and it doesn't have any BS card slots. I think I just talked myself into one!

Tumi for me, I think mine is two years old now...a gift from my wife. Other than the lack of a zipper, it fits the bill. Zippers are for nylon wallets...nylon wallets are for 1982 and OP shorts!

I mention the zipper because that is what my current wallet has. there is a flat bill section, with a flat zip section behind it.
I don't need a zip, but I do like the security that this part of my current wallet gives me.

The Tumi pieces look quite good, some possibilities there.
Also the Bellroy wallets are a great suggestion - the 'hide and seek' wallet they make is def on the shortlist.
The GSD does look good, but I actually prefer those pesky card holders for daily convenience.

PS
I have fond memories of the time I had a nylon wallet, life was simple then, and I had that thing for years!

Have you looked at Saddleback Matt? I'm loving mine so far. It looks similar to what you've got less the zipper compartment.

The Greg Stevens one looks interesting but it doesn't have a flat bill pocket. It's not convenient to fold paper money. Belroy looks the most well thought out line I've seen. Saddleback seems very thick.

I've had two Coach wallets for years and years. One sized for US bills and another larger for foreign money when traveling. I keep my passport in a separate Coach case but the Belroy Travel Wallet seems the better solution.

No idea of the quality these days, but I've also had a Coach wallet for several years. It's held up remarkably well, and I imagine Coach puts out several styles (mine has the card slots, which I prefer, but they probably have something more minimalist, too).

Another good suggestion. Probably bullet proof (perhaps literally, knowing Filson).

I chose the two card slot wallet from Greg as I almost never carry cash, but he does make one that he will do one cash side and one card side like this.

There is only one wallet on earth worth carrying:

It's too hot here for a wallet in the summer. You know, ass sweat and such.

I go with this in the front pocket... much like John's suggestion.... It will hold your cash, your hunting license, a credit card and your DL nicely.

However, King Ranch Saddle Shop does offer some cool wallets if a wallet is your style....

and/or matching checkbook wallet..........

Down here, King Ranch products are considered the absolute finest and the toughest.

I actually had one of those years ago. One day I woke up and all my stuff was in a brand new Prada black leather wallet. I never saw the BMF again.

My favorite wallet brand - Makr. http://makr.com

They have different styles but I have the only below. The flap stays closed even after 3 years. Beautiful leather, incredibly well crafted.
