Watch Box Project

Well I got these two peices of red cedar from dad before he passed away. I wanted to make a watch box out of it at the time and he cut it and dressed up the large peice in his thicknesser and sent it back with me to Sydney with me. It has sat in my garage for the last 5 years waiting for me, needless to say it has a little bit more singnificane now than it did back then and hence I have always been too scared to destroy it. Over the years I go down into the garage and have a beer with it and think about how best to get the right amount of peices for the project.

Well one of my close cousins has been dating a cabnet maker for the last few years and we were having some beers over the weekend and he has taken on the project. I am pleased he is taking the right amount of caution as he measured both peices and to start with will build a full trial watch box so that he has the method down pat before he even touches the cedar.







It will be nice to see this finally start to take shape its been a long time in the making.

Jamie, can't wait to see it start taking shape. Not only will it be a wonderful watch box, it will be from wood your dad gave you and in that sense will mean more to you than any box at any price!! Enjoy the box when it's done and remember how much dad knew you loved watches and just wanted you to have something that was from his heart!

This is the sort of thing I like to see! Will be good Jamie, if there is a thread on the build on both boxes, I am sure I am not alone in having some interest in the boxes and the fact that the wood has sentimental value to you.

How many watches do you think it will hold Jamie? Not being a woodworker i cant even guess how big the box will be from those blocks.

Thanks guys yes its always nice to start a project and I have thought about this one for many years.

I am looking at 3 or 4 slots either 3 at 8 cm or 4 at 6cm just depends on the amount of wood I lose when the wood is ripped down. The larger peice will make the base and sides and the smaller peice should cover the lid and the internal dividers.

Can't wait to see how it comes out.Sounds like the wood has been seating around for a while so the wood should be seasoned and not crack.How is he going to do it cut what we call planks or I guess slices of wood so you piece them together to make the box or carve it out ?

Well im not sure if anyone noticed but I haven't been around much for the last few years with work and family life not much time for watches,,,,,, well always time for watches but not much for the internet forums and such.

So what brought me back? i finally got around to this project. It had been sitting in the garage for over a decade and I finally found the right wood worker and ripped the blocks down and started construction. Ill post some photos of the progress and obviously now I am looking for another 6 - 8 watches to fill the new box.......

Great to have you back. The box looks like it will look great.

It should be ready before most plank owners get the watch they ordered from MKII the same time you started this project.

Jamie, I started making a steel string guitar, that is about 90% finished, just need to shape the neck, glue the bridge, fret board and machine heads and voilà. My son wants to start learning guitar. I started this project with my father (a Luthier) over 30 years ago. So you are miles ahead of me mate.

Looks damn fine, and looking forward to seeing the finished box. J
