Long term car ownership
Long term car ownership
Our Acuras are 15 years old and I've been thinking about picking up a used Acura or maybe Honda Civic if forced to replace one of the Acuras (not looking to do that at all though). I read this list of cars held longest by owners and was intrigued. Toyota trucks!
Rank/% of 15-yr old cars kept by owners
10. Toyota Sequoia 9.1%
9. Toyota 4Runner 9.4%
8. Subaru Forester 9.8%
7. Honda Pilot 10.4%
6. Honda CR-V 10.7%
5. Toyota Tundra 11.3%
4. Toyota Sienna 11.5%
3. Toyota Tacoma 11.6%
2. Toyota Highlander 12.4%
1. Toyota Prius 13.7%
Article I'm looking at says average for all 15-yr old vehicles is 6.1% of those vehicles are held by an original owner.

My Acura TL is now 17 years old, with 190k miles. I’m dreading the day I have to replace it.
Re: Long term car ownership
The first car I owned was a Honda civic, it lasted 14 years and 150k miles in Italy* between me and one of my best friends I sold it to.
He only sent it in for destruction as in Italy we often have incentives where they hand you money to upgrade older cars for new (less polluting) ones.
So the older the car is, the more it makes sense to send it in - the government puts a floor on your car value.
Comprehensive list of things that needed repairing throughout the life of the vehicle:
- 1 front right head light
- 1 driver seat side window motor (the one that pulls the windows up and down)
I think in 15 years you may see some Korean cars creep up that list. Kia, Hyundai and Genesis (same company) share many of the qualities that Japanese cars had in spades 15-25 years ago: great value for money, great warranties, very reliable.
*miles in Europe put more wear and tear VS the average US mile: it's mostly city drive, much less highway, the roads are not great etc.

Re: Long term car ownership
I bought my GMC Yukon SLT brand new in 2001. Kept it for 18 years and put 246,000 miles on it. It was still in excellent condition and going strong so my stepson bought it and only put another 5,000 miles on it over 3 years. He eventually sold it to a mechanic friend of his, who has already made 2 round trips to Florida and back.
He plans on getting 500K out of it.

How do you have a vehicle 17 years and only 190K miles? I’d be like 350Kgonzomantis wrote:My Acura TL is now 17 years old, with 190k miles. I’m dreading the day I have to replace it.

All the family trips are in the Toyota Sienna, also an ‘06. That one has 290k. My Acura is pretty much just a commuter.

Your commute must be nice. I average over 30k a year for work.gonzomantis wrote:All the family trips are in the Toyota Sienna, also an ‘06. That one has 290k. My Acura is pretty much just a commuter.

Re: Long term car ownership
I get the double whammy of living in NH and on the seacoast, so I get both salted roads and salted air. I got 12 years out of my old Tacoma, but I was diligent in getting the chassis oil undercoated every fall, so I had minimal rust.
My wife's Pilot made it 13 years before the rust and maintenance costs become too much of a percentage of the overall vehicle worth.
I figure a modern vehicle with good maintenance ought to be able to go 10 years if you can avoid accidents. If you live outside the rust belt, then you should be able to go considerably longer.

Longest I’ve every had a vehicle was my Jeep Wrangler. Had it 5 years. Everything else seems to move on after 2-3 years.

Re: Long term car ownership
some models are better depending on the year..... I have a 2013 Accord Sport (company car) 180K and I would say it is a piece of crap..... Drive is okay, but the 13 Accords have waaaayyy too many problems, mine included. (I argue Honda felt the heat from Kia/Hundai and pinched quality)

I had my 996.1 GT3 for 15 years. It was 21 years old when I sold it with only 69,000 miles on it, but it was hardly a daily.

I hope I get the type of years, and millage like you guys. Bought Calvin's Jeep JK back in 2014 (so close to 10 years). Odometer is a hundred or so miles shy of 28,900. I still have an extended warranty till 2026. Now that my friend sold his business. I'll be putting more miles on the Jeep.

When your warrant ends you can get one that pretty much goes indefinitely from CarShield, for about a hundred bucks a month.
That Jeep will last you forever at this rate.

Yeah, I'm hoping the Jeep will last a good while. Thanks for the tip on CarShield. The dealer I take the Jeep for oil changes and stuff, sends me emails from time to time wanting to buy the Jeep. But that ain't gonna happen. Can't sell Calvin's Jeep! I sure miss the kid, as well as all my dogs.

Re: Long term car ownership
I’m right at 15 with an ‘08 Highlander, about 136K miles. Honestly, there isn’t anything I want more for typical 4-season NW driving that wouldn’t be solid 5 figures to buy. Sort of the same as with my ‘07 Suzuki motorcyle. I keep thinking I want something newer/cooler, but not at 4-5x the money. I think I’ll continue to drive that stuff into the ground and eat and drink tres merry instead.
Re: Long term car ownership
I got 323,000Kms = 200,702 miles on my 2012 Toyota Hilux. Hopefully get another 150k Kms before I need a new engine. Starts first time every time till last week when I needed a new battery. Now good as new.

Drove a Honda Accord for 15 years / 190k miles (had a couple of weekend fun cars during that time). My wife’s 2012 Highlander has 110k miles and we will keep it for my son which will turn 16 in 1.5 years. Will probably pick up a new Highlander or Grand Highlander for her.
