Anyone into spinning tops?
Anyone into spinning tops?
Been at it for about a year now and love them. Great for unwinding with a beverage.
Started out when my wife got me a titanium forever spin (not recommended as there's much better for the price), and has grown into what you see below!
There were a ton of makers when fidget spinners took the world by storm, but only a couple dozen still exist making fine tops and bases. A dedicated bunch as they survived the fad.
Spin times range from about 4-20 minutes and use tungsten carbide, ceramic, and either synthetic ruby or sapphire bearings. Currently talking to two makers to make tops in the 25-30minute range with tungsten/aluminum , tungsten/magnesium, medium size pull-start/finger version in brass/aluminum.
If anyone is interested i can help get you started with just one good long spinner and base.

I have looked at these many times.
I’d go down the research rabbit hole and become overwhelmed.
I’d love to see a top spin for that long!
Great looking collection!

Only takes one base and one good top to make you content. If you're interested send me a PM as I watch all the makers daily to see what they got. There's a fine base available with one maker, and I can send a message to the one making me the top now... he's the best long spinner maker. Think of it as a bar fidgetSkinny Rogers wrote: ↑Mon Jul 03, 2023 6:15 pmI have looked at these many times.

I love spinners. Preferably dark-haired.

There are some really nice ones in the picture. Fun widget to keep on the desk. Do all of them need the base for, let say, a 1 minute spin?

Re: Anyone into spinning tops?
You don't need a base for a good long spin way beyond 1minute ...It just helps center the top as the base is slightly concave.

There's a few makers that do drawings on facebook but it's a hassle. Some draw-in hundreds and i've never been lucky... plus they're usually stupid expensive being made from shit like timascus. Ain't nobody got time for dat!
Billet spin's EON is a fantastic long spinner at $75 and easy to spin with a bit of practice: https://www.billetspin.com/eon You'll get 15-20minute spins depending on metal. I recommend the brass one as copper is a bit fragile with similar weight, and you will scuff them on the glass. 15-17minutes for brass.
Gary with high valley tops offers excellent stuff all the time (sort by newest on his site). Also has an etsy page. His coin spinners are great and relatively inexpensive vs. some of the stuff he makes. His copper quarter spinner will deliver 7minute spins all day long and it's one of my favorites: https://highvalleytops.com/shop/ols/all
https://www.etsy.com/shop/HighValleyTops He can make whatever you have in mind if you contact him. I'm talking to him on making a revolver spinner with cut spent cases.
CD Peterson offers some cool spinners on occasion made from bronze, mokume, even super conductor. He makes them at his discretion so you'd need to check in on the site occasionally, or follow him on IG where he hints that his shit will become available. He sent me a message once when something i wanted became available, but doesn't take orders: https://www.c-d-peterson.com/
Chase of plier spinning tops is the king of long spinners, and thankfully offers what he has when he makes batches on a first come basis. Shit sells fast but if you contact him via etsy or IG he can let you know what he has coming up. The 1.25"-1.5" W/Al or W/Mg will give you 20-30minute spins and easy to learn. Don't be fooled by his lack of inventory on etsy... he hates the site and is currently making long spinners he occasionally lists, but they usually sell out immediately: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PlierSpinningTops
Now bases:
bruce charles offers 100mm and 150mm lenses of borosilicate glass (pyrex glass) and makes a base for his 100mm lens only: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BruceCharlesDesigns
I bought a 150mm lens and had wood worker dr. phil gandini, who has a facebook and IG page only, make that big pictured base. Super easy to contact and will make a base like the one pictured, or any variation you have in mind. Quick turn around. Took about 2months for mine and it was relatively recent.
DB flame works. He makes custom glass bases from borosilicate as well, even glass tops. He slows down in the summer due to heat in the shop, but typically sells all sorts on his site when it's cooler. Gotta be quick! There's one on his site now that's amazing, but nobody is biting because he's done that color way before, and i think anyone who follows him already has that version or two, including me: https://www.dbflameworks.com/ I will say some of his bases take a bit of getting used to, and tend to work better with makers that use larger bearings (plier). Otherwise, the smaller bearing makers tops get a bit wonky and spin out on their sides and he tends to make them very convex. I've always been able to spin small bearing spinners with no problem on the flip side, but he says that it's just where his tool makes the perfect convex impression... says he tries to make the flip side work but not always guaranteed
Cheapie base is a cosmetic mirror from your local drug store. A lot of long spinning junkies use them exclusively as the concave is just right.

I may go with the highvalley top you recommended or the brass eon to start.
