New addition to the car family
Decided to surprise my wife with a little summer car to cruise the Connecticut/Rhode Island shorelines. Living in a bit more YOLO mode since she went through all she did with being on the front lines as a charge nurse at Yale over the past few months. Gotta enjoy life and not worry about decisions sometimes.
Or, it's simply a mid-life crisis thing. Either way... I'm okay with it.
2003 Boxster with S exhaust upgrade, 71K, clean and in decent nick mechanically.
Any other Boxster owners here?

Congratulations! My brother in law has a Boxster S. Not sure what year, but he bought it CPO a few years ago. Very nice car.

Re: New addition to the car family
I've got a 2001, that I also bought with low miles, a few years back. I had the IMS bearing replaced, just for peace of mind. They say it's the gateway drug, but I'm not sure if my budget will ever allow me to take things to the next level.
Re: New addition to the car family
Depends if you're looking for a sports car or more of a GT car. IMHO, the Boxster and Cayman have the spirit of the classic 911.gonzomantis wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:18 pmThey say it's the gateway drug, but I'm not sure if my budget will ever allow me to take things to the next level.

Some say yes, some say no. There was a class action suit. Multiple aftermarket replacements are out there. I decided to spend some $ and sleep better.toxicavenger wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 8:08 pmisn't that a problem child for this engine?logan2z wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 7:06 pmGood thinking.gonzomantis wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:18 pmI had the IMS bearing replaced, just for peace of mind.

Re: New addition to the car family
I traded a 2001 Mustang GT for it, and have no regrets. It isn't a drag racer, but it's amazing when it comes to handling.Selym wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:55 pmDepends if you're looking for a sports car or more of a GT car. Proactively replacing the bearing is a smart move. Now you can enjoy the car without worrying about the engine self destructing on your next drive.gonzomantis wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 8:21 pmSome say yes, some say no. There was a class action suit. Congrats Todd! Car looks great. A Cayman is in my future for sure (too hot here for a convertible, I already tried once).

Ugh, why did you have to sell this one? Cayman R is such an underrated modern Porsche.

Re: New addition to the car family
I didn't have to sell it, but it never got driven and it was a lot of $$$ tied up in something I never used. The car was five years old when I sold it and it had 9K miles on the clock.
Probably the best gearbox I've ever used, unbelievable feel and precision.
It went to a collector who will also probably never use it

Re: New addition to the car family
I would have gone for the Cayman, but they are so rare, especially in Minnesota. I also feel your pain regarding the lack of use. I didn't even insure it yet this summer, due to my reduced hours at work. I look at it as luxury/toy, and don't take it out if I can't enjoy the drive. That usually eliminates using it for my commute, and any time the weather is questionable.logan2z wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 3:50 pmI didn't have to sell it, but it never got driven and it was a lot of $$$ tied up in something I never used. Re: New addition to the car family
Believe it or not I somehow convinced myself that I was going to daily drive it. I mean it had working AC, ABS, airbags, all of the creature comforts that my daily driven '87 911 didn't havegonzomantis wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 4:55 pmI would have gone for the Cayman, but they are so rare, especially in Minnesota. The first week in I scraped the front splitter multiple times on the speed bumps in the parking garage at work (the car is LOW) and had an SUV park so close to me that I couldn't open my driver's door. That ended the daily driver plan and I started driving my wife's 15 year old BMW to work instead.
The car subsequently spent way too much time on a trickle charger in the garage and it was hard to justify keeping it.
It was a tough decision to sell it. It looked virtually brand new, had super low mileage and R's are pretty rare so not easily replaced. In the end it was the right decision but this thread has opened the wound a little. Thankfully I still have a 993 so that eases the pain a bit.
