Is the SKX007 still the best bang for buck Seiko diver?

Post by Mr_Pacman » Sat Apr 18, 2020 12:08 pm

I've owned these in the past and liked them except for the mineral crystal. I've got a hankering for a Seiko divers and don't want to spend more than $1,000 USD. I know there are lot of options in that price range. I'm looking for best bang for buck. I can get a new SKX009J from Singapore on Ebay for $275 USD including shipping.

Any other models I should be looking at before I pull the trigger? Prefer the classic retro divers looks vs the newer funky ones. I would be open to a quartz Tuna but don't like the new hands they put on them. I used to have an SBBN015 that was great.

Thanks
James

Yeah, probably. The melted butter case and mediocre timekeeping kept it from being as awesome though to me as it probably is for some people. For $1K you can get some killer Seiko stuff. Look at the NAFTs, MM200s, Sumos, Samurais, and all of the new stuff coming out this summer.

Man, I miss that sweet-spot period when used MM300s were just over $1K. Why I sold mine...

I would say spring to a SRP777 (Turtle or NAFT, like we call them here) or a MM200.

The Turtles are better than the SKX IMO, for basically the same price.

I think so. Can't count how many 007/009's that I've bought and sold, but wouldn't mind owning another. Most Seikos I have now are vintage, but recently bought a Sumo which I love.

I’d go Turdle at that price range. IMO, better hacking/winding movement, better fit and finish (relative to Seiko), plus tons of different variations at the low end.

You can find an SRP777 for under $275 these days very easily.

Problem with the NAFT is, and there is no getting around it, it's a big watch. I know the lug-to-lug makes it wearable on most wrists, but it's still a big watch. It wears much larger than the original 630X on which it is based. I agree that the F&F and movement upgrades make over the SKX range make it a great deal though.

I think the NAFT took the SKXs spot for buck banging.
But- I would go SKX all day because they supersized the turtle case. Love both but If it came down to one....

The SKX used to be the title holder, but there's a new head wearing the crown.

About the same size, vastly superior 4R35 auto movement, still 200M WR, and date only (who needs day?). Price is close enough to make it worthy.

I have 009 and 007 value watches, because the damn dimensions just works for me. The SRP777 is killer value, but no fitty my wrist.

For some reason I couldn’t get into the mini turtle. I wanted to love it so bad but it kind of slid around on my wrist with the short L2L and being a little top heavy.

thanks for the suggestions. Call me petty but I don't love the X on the dial of the mini turtle. I'm going with an SKX. Just deciding between the blue 009 or the orange 011. Always liked the orange with the gold hands and bezel numbers and there is a seller in Singapore with new ones for a good price and free shipping to Canada on ebay.

thanks again for the suggestions.

Pic up a nice 6309 instead.

Agree with others that SKX keeps this role due to it's more universally acceptable size.

I’d take a look at the Islander from Long Island Watch. SKX case, and fixes the usual set of complaints about the SKX. Sapphire crystal, hack and hand wind movement, decent after market oyster bracelet, drilled lugs.

I’d say yes in terms of the SKX range in general.
