Seiko pulls out of Basel

Post by rockmastermike » Thu Nov 07, 2019 1:10 pm

https://watchesbysjx.com/2019/11/seiko- ... -2020.html

“ Switzerland’s biggest watch and jewellery fair will see one of its biggest exhibitors, Seiko, depart for good next year, reports Yasuhito Shibuya of Chronos Japan. A Baselworld exhibitor since 1986, the Japanese watchmaker joins the stream of brands that have been departing the event since industry giant Swatch Group’s shock exit last year.

According to Mr Shibuya, Seiko’s official reason for leaving is “because the opening time of Baselworld in 2020 is later than usual”, happening in May instead of the traditional March. Mr Shibuya also adds: “The fair happens a month later, coinciding with the Golden Week in Japan – a period with four consecutive national holidays within seven days.

Instead of Baselworld, Seiko will launch its new products earlier in the year, including recently revealed Grand Seiko Summit taking place March 15-20 at its headquarters in Tokyo

“From the location of the booth to the floor plan of the fair [with Seiko’s booth on the second level], I do not think that Seiko has received equal treatment [as compared to Swiss brands]” noted Mr Shibuya. Despite its importance, both commercially and culturally, Seiko, along with fellow Japanese brands Casio and Citizen, has been relegated to the upper floor of the main exhibition hall since the venue’s lavish redesign in 2013.

The loss of Seiko is no doubt a major blow to Baselworld,

Seiko does releases at during the year at crazy intervals. I do not see why they even went to basel anyway.

Love it.

The coordinators of Basel put the biggest manufacturer out to pasture on the top floor and now Seiko is leaving them out to pasture.

F’em.

I wonder if some if the Swiss vs.Japanese COSC animosity of old had anything to do with them being on the upper level. Maybe a kickback or under the table deal with the big Swiss? If so, double F’em.

Give it time, Basel will be history. Through no fault of their own, they've shown them self's to be irrelevant and out of touch with the movers & shakers...

Wow, interesting Mike ! :o Seiko seems to have a good reason, and there
are so many times all year long to just release watches anyway. Between
all of the different shows, and just right here online. ..The sky is the limit
with showing what any watch company has up their sleeve. :)

Thanks so much for the news !

Japanese tend to be very nice in their approach and smart/ruthless behind the scenes... I should know having married into an entire family of them and my Father-in-law ran the American side of his Father's company for years. Basically the way I read the article translated to take the upper level and shove it where the sun don't shine.

With the recent exodus it was the perfect time to pop smoke without being confrontational.

It sounds like you kinda expect your wife to go to bed with a smile on her face at night only to be woke by her slicing your dingy off with one of those killl bill type samurais swords. at least that’s what I got out “Japanese tend to be very nice in their approach and smart/ruthless behind the scenes..

It's funny Eric, kind of have felt that just from a far too. So it's great hearing
you actually give us a lesson on things like this. :) Honestly feels like they did
what they needed, or at least felt like they needed to do right?!

In a weird way it might actually be a good thing for Seiko. Because now they
don't have to worry about putting any focus on Basel, and can put their energy
somewhere else. Basically any, and everywhere else. ..Who knows, maybe this
could be the beginning of them actually thinking about creating their very
own watch show. One that rivals Baselworld in size, and scope down the road.

Thanks once again sir !
