Seiko Alpinist comeback?

Post by CarloDWC » Mon Nov 04, 2019 8:23 pm

I don't know if you saw this or not but I really like the Alpinist and think this is an interesting piece of news from Seiko:

Here a pic of the newer black dialed model, I really like it:

That “X” is so incongruent.

Another watch for those Seiko enthusiasts who’ve been saying “I sure wish my Seiko had a cyclops”.

It's a comeback in the sense that they're going to start producing it in normal colors again.

I like the cyclops, but what I don't get is why they can't offer all models on either bracelet or strap. That would make things so much easier for the buyer.

The display back bothers me more than the Prospex logo. The solid back of the original was very nice.

I missed that in the original description. Not sure why Seiko does display backs at all on their standard workhorse movements. The Alpinist solid caseback featuring the mountain logo is very nice - a good companion to the wave logo on their diver casebacks.

Can see why you like that black dialed version Carlo ! :headbang:

Not that the tan, or green isn't beautiful too. But this black model
really seems to reveal each, and every single little secret the dial
has within it. Maybe it's the different markers, and numbering, or
just the whole combination. But it's awesome !!! 8-) :)

Thanks so much for the news about them !

I’m out on Seiko. There was a time I would have loved this regardless of the cyclops but that ship has sailed.

They obviously had to make it worse with a see through case back, the shitty X logo and the horrendous cyclops.

YAY!
Hopefully it’s much more expensive too.

Pass.

I'm glad they added all of the none sense because I was worried I might be inclined to purchase one.

Shame because the black one could have been great with cursive "Alpinist" in red (or anything without the prospex PX), and sans cyclops... I can live with clear case back but agree with Chris.

With all that said it will likely grow on me if the price is right.

I'm done buying anything with the 6r movement inside, plus with that hideous cyclops my wallet is safe.

Yeah, me too, now that you remind me, but was hopeful in giving my 4th 6r a run for its money if the watch begged me to take my money. Fool me 4 times shame on me?

Darn, I was so excited when I saw the black dial watch on the picture, it looked like the earlier version of the Alpinist, the one with the hi beat movement.

I have not seen any other data though or pictures so don't know the other details mentioned... but I agree, I would prefer the writing Alpinist to the X in the middle of the dial. I guess this means maybe that this is not even an Alpinist but a Prospex, whatever that means...

One of the great things of the earlier version (SARB models) is that they were antimagnetic too, so a solid caseback would be needed for that. Of course Seiko might be thinking only in terms of higher profits and discounted these details...

Oh well, will see how it comes out, when more data is available. Surely it will be more expensive which puts it out of my reach anyway. :banghead:

Maybe I have to build my own Alpinist...

I did like the old mountain logo..... on the one I sold Andrea a long while back.

Here's the Hodinkee article on the new "alpinist." It's overly-complimentary to the watch and laced with self-flattery (surprise). But I do think the black version with the bracelet looks nice. I wish they would do the cream dial version with the bracelet, but maybe it will be available for purchase separately.

The X is always bad. However, on these particular watches the X is very, very, very bad.

Once again Seiko has added that hideous wart to the crystal.

Plus if the only improvement from the 6r15 to the 6r35 is a 70 hour power reserve, that just tells me it has 20 more hours to sit and be inconsistent.
