Do you still have the watch that got you started

Post by MtnMdc » Sun Sep 22, 2019 3:52 am

I am curious if people still have that first watch that started us all down this rabbit hole. I wore the below Seiko for close to 20 years while in the military. My wife got it for me on xmas 2001, Germany. To this day I still have no idea where she found a 80-90's model brand new in the box. It went to the field, rifle range, deployments and everywhere in between. She has never been serviced and still keeps great time. I have quite a few watches now but she is still my favorite. Many memories her and I. That is my watch story, anyone else have a story?Image

That is a cool story and the watch is badass :salute:

The watch that got me started was a Seiko Arnie... wish I still had it

Also started with an older Seiko in the Marines. Pretty sure it was an old Turtle that I wore for 10+ years before returning it to my father after we had a falling out.

Mine was over 40 years ago, but I wish I still had it. A Sutton Super Sport Diver.

I wish I still had mine. It was a field watch with tritium from the Sportsman’s Guide back when I was probably 12 or 13yo. I thought it was amazing that a watch could have the hands glow no matter what.

Probably why I am so drawn to the 214270...it reminds me of that watch.

Mine was a Casio calculator watch when I was about 7. It could store names and phone numbers too. Hi tech

My 6309. Still have it. Got it in the early 80s. Been on every dive with me, never serviced and runs as good as the day I got it!

I still have and wear my SKX173 I bought new in 1998. Wore it everyday for 16 years, until I really got into watches.

Hand-wound Snoopy and the Red Baron Timex. I have no idea what happened to it, but it was my gateway to Casio digitals and ultimately “real” watches.

The Swatches and calculator watches I had as a kid are long gone. I still have my first grownup watch, a quartz Citizen chronograph I bought in 1996. And of course I still have my first big boy watch, the 16600 I bought in 2008. Which by the way is still the best watch I have ever bought.

Ha, the exact same watch bought in 1986 from a pawn shop on Bathurst St. in the Sydney CBD (long gone), less than 12 months after joining my unit. Did my para course, amphib (small boats) courses and dive course wearing the watch. Thought I'd lost the watch, and it was in very similar condition to yours until I found it in my locker at work.

Never deployed with the watch into a AO, and had it serviced and cleaned up about 10 years ago. Possibly should have left the crystal & bezel all beat up.

no, I was relieved of it by some big mofo on the NYC subway system as a 13 y.o. :angryfire: life in the big city :cussing:

it was one of those cool Borel cocktail watches... can't remember where I got it in the first place?

Not really my watch that got me started but my Dad's. It was the first real memory of a watch. Probably mid 70's and he just got back from a deployment to Korea via Japan. I was probably 9 years old. He brought back a basic blue Seiko automatic. I remember falling on love with the color. Probably why I love blue faced watches to this day.

He wore it or a number of years and it got buried in a drawer for decades I assume.

About 7-8 years ago he found it and gave it to me knowing how much I loved watches. I sent it off for a service and I polished it up a bit. I wore it every so often.

A few years ago his everyday quartz beater needed a new battery. I told him I would put a new battery in. Well the movement was shot.

I gave him the blue Seiko back and he wears it to this day.

It's a vintage 6119-8273Image

The first watch I bought with my own money (about 30 years ago) was one just like this one:

Of course I don't have it, but that opened up my interest in watches.

The watch that got me started was an Explorer style Tudor Oyster Prince very similar to this. I stupidly sold it when faced with a $800 quote to repair and service it. Image

I’ve still got both of mine. My first watch that my parents purchased for me, an old Lorus Mickey Mouse watch. The band has long since been destroyed. I recently put in a new battery and it’s ticking right along 34ish years later

And the second watch is the first watch I purchased with my own money and saw me through all of college, my first job, and getting married. A Seiko quartz chronograph with blue sunburst dial, applied Seiko logo, and oyster bracelet. Love it and still wear it. Also, a big reason I’m a Seiko fan.

Long gone in the deep dark jungles of Ft. Polk, LA. Thankfully it was just a Timex Ironman.

6309 I got here. I love it and wear it more than any other I own. It's been around the DWC block. Spent some time in Vancouver. Beautiful tank of a watch.

Don't remember what I was wearing before this but in '97 I bought an Aqualand which I consider my first real watch. Worn it for 10 years straight and still have it and wear it occasionally.

Circa 1988 for the first one that really got me interested - Seiko quartz. A gift from my parents. I had a Swatch with the protector years before that but no idea where that went.

The Omega started the obsession. Circa 1999. Bond is cool. ImageImage

This really started me off into dive watches. Like you got a Seiko in the Military got it in the early 1980's from the ships store when on westpac.

You can see it on the wrist used it the whole 22 years in the Navy plus the civilian job. Some years ago sent it to Jack at IWW to fix her up she was really beat to hell.
