Grand Seiko recommendation... 37mm+

Post by Bradystraps » Thu Aug 15, 2019 7:52 am

Gents,
I’m looking for a GS auto/mechanical in 37mm or larger and at least 19mm lugs. Preferably 20mm.
Would love a birth year (1969) but any year in that vintage range is fine.

Thanks!

If you are looking for vintage, there are currently a few listed on WUS. Also, you may want to keep an eye on the SCWF Sales Forum as they show up now and then. Also, there are several available on ebay from Japanese sellers. Generally, the later cushion case models come in at 37mm or larger. As for 20mm lugs, not sure about that. The ones that I've owned have had either 18 or 19mm lugs. Good luck.

Nope. Your OP said any year was fine.

Seems service might be a problem. I remember reading an instance where Seiko sent a nice postcard back to the owner saying you’re SOL.

A great bang for your buck is to find a 61GS series watch. These all date to around the time frame you want, and represent some of the best movements Seiko ever made. Most are right about 37mm.
The numbering system tells you alot about the watch. A 61xx is a Grand Seiko watch, with a Hi Beat36,000 bph movement. A 6145 or 6146 indicates that it was expected to keep with 4-6 seconds a day right out of the box (the '5' means its a date movement; a '6' means its a day/date).
A 6155 or 6156 was a higher grade movement, expected to keep 2-5 seconds a day right out of the box. They usually have the word "Special" on the dial. The finish on all of these was superb, being Grand Seikos. They can be found at very reasonable prices.

Then there were the 6185 watches - made in limited quantities primarily to qualify as a production watch for competitive timekeeping purposes. They had some insane spec, like 10 seconds a month straight from the factory. These were marked "VFA" for Very Fine Adjustment, and had the highest level of quality and regulation. They are hard to find, and the prices are all over the map.
