Anyone bead blast Seiko black IP coating?

Post by pbj204 » Sat Jul 13, 2019 12:53 pm

I got a good deal on a new Save the Ocean solar chronograph in black IP, but I don't like the shiny black. I'm wondering if it could be bead blasted?

Wouldn’t that likely break through the coating?

Ideally I would like it to break through the coating and just leave bead blasted stainless steel. I would prefer that to the shiny black.

Is there a way to go from gloss black to aged black?

They could tumble it, much like they do with stonewashed knives.

I have a hunch you'd end up with a "distressed" ion-plated surface, which might look cool. I doubt the bead blasting will cleanly remove the ion plating. Go for it!

Ala Gruppo Gamma Vanguard vintage aged steel. Also same on one of the newer metal G’s. A very cool PVD look.
