Home made watch box
Morning guys,
Thought I would share this now even though it's not quite finished. I have been working on this box for a few years now on and off and its nearly finished. After messing around with various watch boxes and watch winders over the years, I wanted to bring the whole collection together in one place.
I bought the box some years ago at a time in my life when things were not so good. Quit my job, took on 2 mortgages and health was not so good so even though the box was only £30 it seemed a big thing at the time but I knew I had to grab it as it was exactly what I had in mind.
The box is an old scientific instrument box and very well made, strong enough to stand on! It took a while before I set too with building it and I have been slowly getting it to how it is now with time allowing.
First, I stripped the box of all fittings and lacquer and smoothed it all down. After planning out how I want the inside to look, I made the watch dividers from MDF. Once this was done I covered it all in fabric and trimmed the inside with red velvet.
There is enough height for 2 layers so I made 2 drop in smaller boxes, one for more watches and the other, for now, for all my straps and tools.
The box exterior was waxed with several coats and polished. I have to say, that came out a lot better than I thought. The smaller boxes were built from scratch and just need a bit more finishing off. Apart from the box itself, all the conversion work and woodwork and trimming has been done by me and I sort of learnt as I went.
I am very pleased with the results so far and all my watched are now in one place. It's a big ass box so now the next problem is where to put it!
Last jobs will be to do final trimming on the watch pillows, probably in a light grey fabric and add some hardware so the box looks like an old travel or seafaring chest.
Enjoy.

Thanks Tom, it sure has been enjoyable to build, I have learnt some new techniques and may apply these to another box in the future.AtomicTom wrote:Yeah, that really IS impressive Jeremy, and just plain beautiful !

Great to see this
It is a journey I need to go on
How did you cut the slots in the mdf to get them to “jigsaw” together?

Re: Home made watch box
I have come this far so it will be completed. I cut the slots using a fret saw and chisel. I measured the gaps and the height they would need to be from top to bottom. I made a couple of trial cuts and once I was happy, went for it.amckiwi wrote:Great to see this

I forgot to mention before but one of the best thing about the build has been using my grandfathers old tools, some over 100 years old. He died before i was born but I feel a sort of connection

Your are very welcome Jeremy ! Just is so neat to hear how much fun you
had, and see how incredible this beauty turned out.
What's cool too, is since you have those three spots left. It will give you some
time to plain out your next watch box, and utilize those new techniques even
more !
Until then though, hope you keep on enjoying this masterpiece sir !!!
