Almost every watch that people want and doesn't generally suck is really expensive these days. The only exception that I can think of are 2500 POs and IWCs from before Richemont ran them into a wall.

This is a joke. I thought you could still get them for under $500?
At this point the “Seiko god” is ripping people off. But what does that matter? Dumb fucks like the noob from months back (who left, wanted his membership deleted after I asked why he thought his “Spencer serviced” Seiko was so special) would still deep throat him if he asked.

I think the 2254 has reached "expensive" status already. You used to be able to get one that I'd own for $1750. Now it's been probably over a year since I saw a good one and you'd probably have to near double that price to get a good one.Seppia wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 10:43 amAnd the older seamaster like 2254, 2230, etcJP Chestnut wrote:Almost every watch that people want and doesn't generally suck is really expensive these days. It is amazing we got to the point of calling a $3000 watch "a deal" though.
Watches like the IWC 3227, 3228, 3706, 3536, and Mark XV have all been down or flat for the last couple of years. A 3227 at $3500 is an almost unbeatable value for a real Genta watch.

Damn I remember when I got a 2254 for $950. But it is a great watch. The Seiko 6139 was literally a cheap watch when produced. The 2254 was not.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:03 amI think the 2254 has reached "expensive" status already. You used to be able to get one that I'd own for $1750. Re: Seiko 6139 prices
Prices on garden variety pre-owned Speedmasters have been holding steady in the high 2's to mid 3's depending on condition. The classic 36mm Rolex Explorer can still be had for a reasonable price when compared to other Rolex sports models, and so can the 40mm Explorer II (but prices on those are creeping up). And you can still get an older (pre case redesign) 36mm datejust for less than $4,000. I think JLC's represent a great value for what you're getting, but that's only when you compare them to a Patek or an AP and the like.Seppia wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 10:43 amAnd the older seamaster like 2254, 2230, etcJP Chestnut wrote:Almost every watch that people want and doesn't generally suck is really expensive these days. But, yeah, generally there's nothing I really want that I can afford.

Re: Seiko 6139 prices
Both of those are totally quality dependent though. I turned down a NOS V serial (last of the breed IIRC) 114720 a few years ago. It was $4250. That watch would be $7,000 now. Nice white 40mm, the only one I'd want, Exp 2's are reaching "WTF" levels of price. A NOS 3186 white dial is within sight of $10,000 now.JBZ wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:11 amThe classic 36mm Rolex Explorer can still be had for a reasonable price when compared to other Rolex sports models, and so can the 40mm Explorer II (but prices on those are creeping up).Seppia wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 10:43 amAnd the older seamaster like 2254, 2230, etcJP Chestnut wrote:Almost every watch that people want and doesn't generally suck is really expensive these days. Someone recently sold a NOS 14060m with an asking price of $15,000. Shit, even the five digit SS YM is getting expensive.
Two legit under valued Rolex models are the previous Datejust and five digit Day Date. You can still hunt down a NOS DJ for $4500 if you look hard. The DJ has the crappy hollow end links, but it looks A LOT better than the bloated shinny six digit alternative.

I really wanted a 2264 as a cheap grab and go. Now nice examples of those are hitting the low $2,000s!toxicavenger wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:07 amDamn I remember when I got a 2254 for $950. Not sure about that.
What was the cost of a 2254 when sold new in the early 2000s? I was thinking around $1800-2000?
If so that is not even close to a Seiko that was built as a throw away that cost around $200 now getting over $2000-$2500.
And I’m not just talking about the 6139. I’m taking about the 6105 and 6309 and whatever else these dumb asses want to pay stupid prices for and increase their value.
Hey, maybe I’ll just list one of my Seiko and claim that Spencer rubbed his balls on it and ask 10x the price.

Re: Seiko 6139 prices
Definitely true about quality (and a complete set adds value, of course). You can get a decent 114270 for right around $5,000 if you're willing to forego box and papers. Even if you need to have it serviced, that still isn't terrible. OTOH, my first 14060 (no bracelet) cost me $2,000 about 10 years ago, so when you compare it to that...JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:20 amBoth of those are totally quality dependent though. Exp II's without B&P are going for over $5,000 now. Complete sets are going for over $6,000. And the whole thing with the 3186 movement is a recent phenomenon. Absolutely no one gave a crap about that until recently when 3186 GMT's started to skyrocket. The Explorer II is finally catching up.
I agree with you about the DJ - it's a shame that Rolex decided to bling out the modern version.
Re: Seiko 6139 prices
Those are particularly egregious. The quartz movement Omega uses in them is pretty pedestrian to my understanding. It's a $1,200 watch, and that's only because the case is Omega quality.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:21 amI really wanted a 2264 as a cheap grab and go. Re: Seiko 6139 prices
The fact that you guys are bringing Rolex and Omega into a Seiko thread about price is telling.
And talk about pedestrian- these Seiko have movements that require you to shake before you strap it on your wrist.

Re: Seiko 6139 prices
Well, that's true. I absolutely love inexpensive Seikos for what they are. Sure, you have to shake the movement, but once you do, it keeps going and going and going. So that price on the 6139 is ridiculous. Hopefully it's an outlier, but I remember when you could get a used MM for like $1,200, and that wasn't so long ago. Everything is trending upward.

Definitely agree on the 114270 and the five digit DJ.
I secretly want an older day date, but I'd have to study a bit and it's a lot of coin.
Since we basically have very similar tastes, what are your favorite DD references?
I may start from there.
https://www.instagram.com/p/ByDpn8In9NP/
I thought about buying that one, but sadly it sold in a couple days. As far as more mainstream options go, I like the regular old 18038. I'd skip the tritium versions due to failing plots and general crap conditions. You can still get a mint/complete/unpolished late 18038 for around $13,000.
I really want a last of series Oyster Quartz DJ (or DD) as well, but finding good examples is getting too hard.
The IWC 3706 is a really nice normally sized vj7750 chronograph. It also lacks the Nazi-style hands of most modern IWC pilot watches. The bracelet is insanely good and they can be had <$3000 in nice condition/completeness.
Re: Seiko 6139 prices
I’ve always wanted to dabble in vintage Seiko but I may just stick with non limited edition reissues. Crazy.

Check out the Mark XV as well. It’s the three hand version of the 3706.
Re: Seiko 6139 prices
No TT DD's. They're all 100% precious metal. A WG or platinum version would be cool, but probably not in this lifetime for me.
If I were going to do a TT, I'd probably look at a 5 digit GMT. But you can get a TT DJ for a reasonable price (for a Rolex).
And now we've completely hijacked this thread - Sorry T.

The tridor is TT’ish, in that the case is WG, the bezel is YG, and the bracelet is WG/YG/RG.JBZ wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 1:50 pmNo TT DD's. They're all 100% precious metal. A WG or platinum version would be cool, but probably not in this lifetime for me.

Re: Seiko 6139 prices
I thought about getting another 6139-6005 but decided against because it would be hard to beat mine plus prices are on the rise.
I foresee seiko parts will be in high demand and I might be the asshole who sells a couple chronograph wheels for $300 years from now. I found a nice 6139B movement and try to buy part number 888612 whenever I can find them sealed... the seiko god himself once told me that’s the part to buy whenever it becomes available. I’d like to secure another 6139B for shits and giggles so that my son will have no problems servicing the watch during his lifetime.

Re: Seiko 6139 prices
First thing I thought of when I read Terry's OP. What an idiot bringing that game here. I have nothing against Spencer but the way he's idolized reminds me of Yao, except Spencer is at least legitimate and seems like a good guy... I've bounced some questions off him in exchange for nothing more than his expertise when he could have told me to pound sand. More power to him selling a 6139 for that amount IMHO.BBK357 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 10:42 amtoxicavenger wrote:Spencer just sold one for $2500. Freaking whack

The Vintage Seiko clique can be a bit strange. When I bought Jonathan's 6139 with modded white bezel and dial I had a ton of emails over the course of a good two years asking if it was available and who owned it currently. I had originally bought it because 1) I thought it was cool enough and the price was right, but more importantly 2) I wanted it for parts knowing the movement was fresh, but eventually couldn't bring myself to use a devout Seiko dude's watch for parts considering he's no longer on this Earth. I ended-up selling it to a big aftermarket Seiko player in exchange for cash and 6139 bracelets.
But one thing is certain. Jump on a good example for <$500 now as the secret it out. There was a recent black dial on recon and I missed it for $375. I'd go as far to say grab any original 6139-6005 yellow in the <$800 range and sit on it.
Re: Seiko 6139 prices
I bought a 6139 from Spencer many years ago for $250. At that time, he wasn’t really working on other people’s watches. Cool guy but he stopped responding to my emails more recently when I was looking for 6139 advice.
Re: Seiko 6139 prices
When you're ready to move it for $250 I'll be ready.
Re: Seiko 6139 prices
There's another Spencer watch here: https://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-se ... 63379.html Bad shots of the date wheel stuck in the half position.
I will say it's a very nice example and crisp but GTFO at $1600. I could see $800 but this was a $500 watch a mere 3yrs ago. Whack is right and why I wouldn't mind snagging one more when a good example comes-up at <$500
Spencer isn't the only guy who can service these and I wonder if people think he's the only gig in town? I sent two to John at Time Essentials in Pasadena years ago and they came back perfect in <1month turn-around. One quickset day/date was completely shot and he got it back to like new. Still works great with positive clicks every time. The other 6139 I sent him was my pals and his is still running strong as well.

Three years is a lifetime ago in watches. Three years ago you could get an unpolished complete matte dial 16800 for $4500. They’re three times that now.
