Looking of BOD Input
Afternoon gents,
Helping a friend with a watch purchase for his wife. She is looking for gold and rectangular/tank style.
He has an explorer himself but is not a "watch guy"
Looking to give him ideas from basic to Cartier to give him some ideas.
Suggestions? I know, google is my friend but he's my top client and I want to do a little more for him.
Appreciate and help fellas.
Mike

DP on a browser, thats a first for me.
Re: Looking of BOD Input
cartier is the softball answer.
reverso is a great, less conspicuous suggestion.
i always liked the many variations of the baume et mercier hampton tanks, but mostly the much earlier versions.
speaking of which, if he's willing to go vintage that would open up the options a bit: patek, ap,gp, omega, bulova, longines...
i picked up a really cool vintage seiko tank for my wife last year and she loves the look.

Re: Looking of BOD Input
Cartier kinda seems like the obvious choice here – tons of range in design and price options, and from a brand that most women recognize and appreciate. But if I were to recommend something a little more left-of-center still from a noteworthy brand, check out the Ralph Lauren (hear me out) Stirrup watches.
Tank style but with a twist, available in both gold and stainless steel (I'd argue the steel is better looking), and the real kicker is that it's built with an ultra-thin Piaget movement. I personally really like this one. Piaget movement for $2k is also insanity.
Hermes is also doing some really nice stuff from a design standpoint (and brand recognition), but fuck me, they're quite a bit more expensive for what's arguably a less horogically compelling build.

Great suggestions so far. Much appreciated. He's looking to stay under 10, so I've moved him off gold and opened up the field.

I saw the Hermes as well, but I have a hard time shepherding him that way for the same reason.

If I were a professional looking for a dress watch instead of a grimy retiree, I'd want a Reverso Duo.
No, it's not Tourettes.
Re: Looking of BOD Input
I'd only recommend Hermes if brand recognition was absolutely paramount for the future wearer. Otherwise, that's a quartz watch for $3k.
I just remembered another decent option that has great recognition (even my wife knows them, and she's not a jewelry girl) – the Tiffany East West. Neat twist on the art deco Tank style, lots of dial color options and a few case options as well. Kind of expensive for a quartz movement, but I'd argue that TIffany's has legitimate design and watchmaking heritage, whereas many other fashion houses do not. For context, the 'Dink did a great story on the new-ish CT60 collection awhile back: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/Tiffany-CT60
Re: Looking of BOD Input
Cartier tank assuming it's in his budget. It's a classic for a reason. Available in various sizes and styles; quartz and auto. Date and no date.
And chances are very good that she'll know Cartier - she probably won't know the others, so Cartier will avoid the "honest, honey, it's a great watch" conversation.

On edit: she'll know Tiffany, too, but I wouldn't do that particular watch unless he knows she's okay with a sideways dial.

My wife has an Ebel Brasilia and a Cartier Ballon Bleu. Both are quartz, neither broke the bank, and both are gorgeous.

Re: Looking of BOD Input
One more rec from me – it's not really a Tank style, and from a purist standpoint, the BOD might not approve of the Panerai Due, but I'll be damned if it isn't still a fantastic-looking watch.

Not bad at all Zach. I am afraid it strays quite a bit from "gold tank",

Another vote for this one:

Thought that RL had a version, but I'm not finding it.

Re: Looking of BOD Input
I like that Ebel. My wife's 50th is in January and she's difficult when it comes to jewelry, but she did like the one watch I bought her (vintage women's datejust). Unfortunately Cartier is a bit out of my league unless I find a good deal on a pre-owned one, but that Ebel might fit the bill.hoppes-no9 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 1:22 pmMy wife has an Ebel Brasilia and a Cartier Ballon Bleu. Re: Looking of BOD Input
This is weird. It was all black PVD and when I came back it was ss and white....much better and worth a share. Thx.

Re: Looking of BOD Input
haha yeah, I messed up the image link and it had the 'night' view initially. Comes in rose gold. I figure this case shape is an ovalized rectangle, so it ain't too far from the original casting call
Dunno if it's worth pointing out, but Topper's running some wild clearance right now (https://shop.topperjewelers.com/collections/clearance) with a bunch of women's Longines watches I didn't even know existed. This one's pretty sweet, and fits more closely with your guys initial ask:
Also, Longines doesn't use solid gold – it's gold-capped for their two-tone watches. Sorta like Tudor, they use actual gold to just cap the base stainless steel material. So it shouldn't wear off like a cheaper PVD coloring.

I don’t have any advice for his wife, but if he’s not a watch guy and he wants to trade his explorer, I’ve got a great “deal” for him

Hahaha Paul. I doubt it. His brother and sister have it to him on his 60th last year.
