SOTC and a bucket list item
SOTC and a bucket list item
I always enjoy a good SOTC thread and figure I would throw mine up here for a gander. My collection has morphed over the past 6 months and I’m really enjoying it these days.
For a long time it was the SD4K and Explorer. That was going to be the end all be all. But you guys know how it works. You make the mistake of going online and that’s all it takes for you to dream about the next piece. Mine was the no date sub. I’d had one before and I really missed the simplicity and dimensions of it. But it being outside of my budget I went for the Black Bay black. Not a bad watch per say but that polished slab side is awful and it just wasn’t a Sub. So I sold it and picked up a blue Pelagos which has been a big surprise for me. I’ve had the ETA version before and while it’s a great watch it just felt a little drab after a while. I can’t say that for the blue version though which changes colors depending on the light, and contrary to most I prefer the increased text on the dial and 70hr power reserve.
The Pelagos put my collection in a weird spot with the SD. They just felt too much the same with the helium valves and thickness. So I took the opportunity to part with the SD and pick up my Sub and a watch I’ve always wanted to come back to, the Speedmaster. Like most people I feel like the Speedmaster has that cool factor that’s just hard to beat. Mike was kind enough to allow me a few weeks to get my funds together and sold me an absolute beautiful example.
So with that, I’ve got what I feel to be a very classical and well rounded collection. I may pick up another Seiko or two but for the first time in a while I’m feeling very content.
The second part of my story has little to do with watches but is just too cool not to share. Earlier this year I found out Clint Eastwood was going to be starring and filming his next movie 20 minutes up the road from my house. I thought, hey that’s neat, it’ll be cool to see some local stuff on the big screen. Well, a few weeks after the article comes out my wife sent me a casting call for several different parts for the film. You have to send in your name, age, weight, sizes, etc. along with some pics for a chance to be in the film. So, what do I have to lose, I put in for it thinking nothing would come of it. And holy crap I got an email a few weeks later saying they wanted me for multiple shoots if I was available! I about spit my drink out reading the email and of course responded with yes, I’m available!
So fast forward a few months and a costume fitting later, I’m on set, filming a movie with Clint Eastwood!! I’ve always wanted to be a part of a tv show or film but never thought anything like this would happen. And to work with and see Clint Eastwood perform his craft was such a surreal experience. A highlight memory to be sure. I shook his hand and we spoke for a few minutes and he’s the nicest, most down to Earth guy you’ll meet. So if you get the chance, go see The Mule when it comes out in December. Based on a true story about a down on his luck war veteran who starts running drugs for the cartel in his 70’s. And maybe you’ll get to see me in the background . Don’t know how to embed the trailer from my phone but here’s a link. And for those wondering, I wore my Explorer.

TL:DR - got some watches, worked with Clint Eastwood

Wait - you’re going to be in a movie with Clint Eastwood?! Very cool.
Oh, nice watches as well Solid line up and I could easily see myself being happy with just those.

Nice collection and a cool story, thanks for sharing.
I'm trying to whittle mine down a bit, everyone just keeps releasing cool stuff that I want!

Current strategy is just to keep reducing the size of the watch box...
This is my current situation.
Interestingly, my wife told me the only one she definitely would keep is the triumph.

Brother Matt! Your collection is to die for and I love every one of them.. but the Clint Eastwood story rocks the house.
My Younger brother passed away this year at 50 and he was the BIGGEST Clint Eastwood fan in the world! The next time I talk to him, I will share your awesome story with him.

Thanks guys and I’m sorry about your brother. 50 is way too young.
It’s funny I was telling some millennials at work about the movie and they’re like “Clint who?” I couldn’t believe it! Unforgiven is in my top 5 of all time!

Real nice collection you've put together, Matt.
Re: SOTC and a bucket list item
Stellar collection, you have most all the bases covered there for sure. I'm with you about the Pelagos, finally someone else that wanted a bit more text
I grew up enjoying his Dirty Harry (and other) movies a lot, working with Clint must have been awesome.

Re: SOTC and a bucket list item
Thanks everyone again. Hope Clint is able to do some more after this one but he’s definitely starting to move around a bit slower. It’s amazing what he’s doing at 88. I can only hope I’m in that good a shape.
Re: SOTC and a bucket list item
Nice collection for sure! And the speedy pro is an all time classic piece

Nice collection and cool story. Clint is probably one of the few celebrities I'd actually like to meet.
