I have no idea, but it just works. Seriously 100% of the time.
Lol likely because it actually does nothing and your phone is never really locked. :)

Nah, it def locks. There’s no way anyone is getting into my phone unless they have hacking expertise, my face, or the pass key. On occasion my wife has picked up my phone when I get a text and it won’t display unless it sees my face. Same for her phone ({iPhone X).

Same experience as Todd. I even use the low def (less secure) setting that unlocks with sunglasses, and it’s never opened for someone else in glasses or by mistake.

How do you set the low def setting, Tom?

Used both Android and iPhone, mostly agnostic, but currently have an X. I'll likely upgrade, on the same upgrade yearly plan so the cost is, for the most part, sales tax.

As for face id, that's been the biggest plus since I moved to the X. Just works, 99% of the time. Unlocks w/o me even thinking about it (you do have to enter your passcode once any time the phone is restarted to enable face id). But it's more than unlocking, apps like Eric's favorite PayPal, password apps, banking apps, etc all support it so I almost never have to enter a password. Love it for Apple Pay, just press the side button twice while looking at the phone and then hold it up to the pay terminal - takes all of 2 seconds to pay where it's supported, which is a lot of places.

Faced ID uses IR, so no light. As for sun glasses or hats, Settings/Face ID & Passcode and turn off "require attention for face id". Slightly less secure, but works fine (still uses depth sensors) and if someone can still get by that, you probably have bigger problems (like you are unconscious and someone else has your phone and your body).

Don't miss the home button and gestures become second nature rather quickly.

To each his own, but I was skeptical, and found it's a really nice device and the most fun to use phone I've had yet.

I’m pretty sure mine is on the “regular” setting and it still doesn’t have problems with most sunglasses. For some reason it’s doesn’t like Ray Ban Wayfarers, which I assume has to do with the IR not being able to get through the lenses. Works perfectly with all my Costas, Oakley’s, and regular prescription glasses. If I am wearing the Ray Bans it just prompts me to put in the pass code.

I don’t know, I’m maybe paranoid but I’ve always avoided Android for privacy concerns, I also never activated the Touch ID and would never activate the Face ID either.

To get back on topic, since I got back from the USA I have never upgraded, because in Italy company phones are usually android, so I kept my old iPhone I got from work in NYC back in the day.
I still have a 6, thinking about upgrading on my dime to the upcoming iPhone Xr, it will have the same chip+ram as the Xs but at 25% less cost.
Don’t really care about the worse camera as on today’s iPhones they are just different grades of awesome.
The Xr seems to render even the option of a used X pointless.

I may try to skip another generation though.
It’s not the same ram, that XR has 3gb of ram and the XS 4gb. Also the XR has a LCD display with a lower resolution display. If you are coming from a 6 though, doesn’t matter. It would still be an upgrade for you.
Personally if I was coming from a 6 and was going to upgrade, for $250 more the XS is a better buy in that regard.

Hopefully the biometric data is stored only locally on the phone, but who knows?

Regarding the screen, weirdly enough I seem to prefer LCD displays to OLED.
I like the colors better
Keep in mind you won’t be able to watch full HD video on it either as the display is only 828p which means it will revert to 720p when watching videos. Which is weird since it can record 1080p at 60FPS but you can’t watch that back on the device itself.

It’s steep for sure. But considering how much people use their phones, it’s all relative I guess.

Plus, most normal people think we’re crazy to spend any amount on a watch when a phone tells the time just fine!

It is, but if you “rent” it (with contract), it does not seem as painful as it just looks like more/month for cell service. Still, if you can live w/o some of the features, it does not make sense. I’m one of those that uses it as a phone about 5% of the time, more like a computer, so it makes more sense for me.

EVERYTHING captures your image. Everything.

Any “thing” that has the ability to capture data AND connect will compromise you and leave you vulnerable. Any thing. If you draw power - read: attach yourself to a power line - from the grid I can compromise you. If you connect wirelessly - cell or WiFi - I can compromise you. Unless you own your own bandwidth and you make the devices that connect to that bandwidth and only communicate with others like you on that bandwidth and you have created that bandwidth to travel securely along its frequency you’re fucked.

The only way to remain secure is to not be on the grid, in any way. Do not connect. The moment you walk by an ATM or drive through a camera’d intersection or turn your phone on or sit in a restaurant minding your own business but two tables away a young kid takes a random selfie and you’re inadvertently in the background you’re fucked. I was told, over a decade ago: if you can plug it in I can compromise it. And nothing I know today has dissuaded me from that belief.

So just jump in with both feet, that’s what I’ve done. I got this email recently saying they had compromised my camera and watched me watching porn, and they wanted money or they’d distribute the images to those in my contact list. Here’s my response:

Thinking of going Android/Google with my next phone. I really fail to grasp what extra I'm getting buying an iPhone versus another type of phone.

Yup. And this comes from a CIA guy. Haven’t you seen Snowden? They’re watching you all the time. Even in Italy. They just watched you sitting on the toilet taking your daily wruw pic.

One of the best things happened recently and that was the “craze” of everyone hunting Pokémon’s around the world.

So you found a CREATED fake thing behind a secure fence in a place I haven’t seen AND YOU TOOK A FUCKING PICTURE OF IT with a date and time stamp with geocoordinates and were kind enough to upload it to the cloud?! Thank you #youfuckingidiot for doing the hardest job in the world - gaining physical access to sites and recording it - for me.

And who brought you the infrastructure and funding for that awesome game? That’s right kids:

Yup, this is why I stay on top of it. Of all the things I can spend "extra" money on, the money spent on the phone is the most impactful. I use it constantly for both work and personal, and if I don't have to worry about it being slow, incompatible, inconvenient, running out of battery, taking unreliable pics/videos of the kids, running out of space, etc... then that's a great deal more useful to me than an extra coffee from Starbucks or another watch strap every so often.
