Shogun vs Pelagos
Shogun vs Pelagos
I am looking for a titanium diver for my everyday watch and would love to hear from guys who have had both of these.
Do I owe it to myself to try out a Shogun first or should I just skip it and just save up and go for the Pelagos
I'm about half way towards a pelagos right now, will probably be able to get one without much of a struggle budget wise by the start of 2019. Still unsure if I'd want ETA or In House. That being said I could get a used Shogun now and keep saving up and flip it later on and hopefully not lose too much?
Thinking I should try out the Shogun first in case I like it so much that it kills the desire for a pelagos all together, but I kind of doubt that will happen. There are a few things I like more about the Shogun.... Drilled lugs to make it easy for strap changes, I hear it's a better strap monster than the Pelagos too.
Pelagos has it's obvious advantages ... Fit/finish, movement quality/accuracy, ceramic bezel, adjustable clasp. Unsure which titanium holds up better to wear. I assume Tudor uses a higher quality/grade of titanium but the Shogun has the diashield coating.

Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
I owned a Shogun shortly before getting a Pelagos. Great watch for the price but certainly outclassed by the Tudor. The Tudor basically gives you Rolex quality at a lower price point and is one of the ultimate tool divewatches. Bezel action is tremendous with a stop at 12. Great adjustable bracelet. Fantastic dial and lumed ceramic matte bezel. Etc...
Shogun is a great sub $1k Watch. Bracelet is a huge weak point but it looks great on NATO’s it straps. Finish is good. Has diashield so it is more resistant to scratches.
If the Tudor is what you want, the Shogun won’t fill the void, but it will be a fun stop along the way. If you buy used you won’t lose much on the sale.

Shogun is great, especially at its price point. I never warmed up to the bezel insert, but that's just my preference.

Agree w all this. One thing I would add is that the shogun wears a bit thinner/lighter than the Pelagos. I think the Pelagos has a steel caseback which accounts for the weight, and the case has slabby-er sides.dnslater wrote:I owned a Shogun shortly before getting a Pelagos. Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
Love the Shogun but the 6r15 movement sucks!
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
How about the Shogun and a Pelagos LHD. I believe both could coexist in the same rotation, and the LHD is just so cool.
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
Pelagos is the only titanium, full-lumed bezel diver Rolex makes. That's it, compare.
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
If I am spending a grand I don't think a shitty bracelet is acceptable. I hear you can put the MM clasp on it but it looks a little off?dnslater wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 3:02 pmI owned a Shogun shortly before getting a Pelagos. I think I may just skip the Shogun and go for it

6r15 is basically just a 7s26 with hacking and handwinding. It has a long power reserve which is nice, but timing can be all over the place with a lot of positional variation. It is bulletproof though due to its simplicity and low beat rate.tyd450 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 11, 2018 4:01 pmIf I am spending a grand I don't think a shitty bracelet is acceptable. The diashield certainly makes it more scratch resistant. The Ti on the Pelagos scratches a little easier than stainless, but Titanium oxidizes quickly so they kind of fade into the dull titanium finish so they are ultimately less noticeable.
The Shogun genuinely looks like a Stainless Watch thanks to the diashield. Amazing how Seiko does this. Bracelet is comfy, but it is a faux oyster style with single links made to look like separate links that drove me crazy at this price point. Seiko has sinced upped their bracelet game in recent releases around this price. Great strap watch, but if you like bracelets get the SBDC051 which wears similar but has a great bracelet.

Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
I'm a Seiko fanboy but never warmed up to the Shogun.
Tudor all the way.

Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
Shogun is a cool watch. The Pelagos is one of the best watches. If you can stretch to get one, do it. I let mine go last year, and I really miss it.
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
I should have bought Jeff’s.
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
Hypothetical question .Would any of you guys still pick the ETA over the in house if the in house had the same 2 lines of text on the dial instead of the novel?
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
Height difference is .5mm and all in the caseback, so yes, the dial is the turnoff for most. The advantages of the in house are clear with double the power reserve and better than COSC accuracy.
Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
A bit of apples and oranges, IMO
I’ve had both a couple of times and although the Seiko is cool and all, the Pelagos is on a whole other level.

Never had a Shogun, it looks cool but my Pelagos 2-liner is definitely a keeper, I love it!

Re: Shogun vs Pelagos
Owned both for a short while, though never understood why. Thought I'd get a Shogun to spare the Pelagos from hard wear, but I never really warmed up to it. The Pelagos is simply a fantastic watch with a lot of subtly excellent details, mine's been stupidly accurate for the 5 or so years I've owned and abused it, only drawback is the low power reserve (Seiko's 6R beats at a lower frequency so you'll get better reserve).
