hi

Post by tyd450 » Thu Apr 26, 2018 7:50 am

I've been lurking for a couple weeks now and decided it was time to introduce myself. I like the vibe here much more than the other forums so I see myself sticking around.

My passions are fine dining, wine collecting, tentacle porn and asking Terry his opinion on things via Instagram PM.

A/S/L: 33 y/o male married with a couple young kids in the Chicago suburbs.

I have been interested in pocket knives for a few years and recently become bored (content with my collection) with those and my interest started shifting to watches. So I am definitely new to the watch world -well I have always worn a watch but it was mainly random low tier department store stuff that I thought looked nice, until recently as I have started to notice my eyes wandering more into the details/specifics of what actually goes into making a nice watch.

I have been all over the place with my collection... g-shocks, citizen eco-drive, seikos, orient, microbrands and then noticed my collection growing larger in size than i preferred and my tastes getting a little more pricey. I decided to sell off most the collection and slum it with a nice Orient while I save up for something really nice and stupid.

That is my story and I apologize in advance if I ask some dumb questions while I navigate the start of my watch journey. I'm not sure what direction I want to take things but I am enjoying all of the time I am wasting researching helium escape valves, drilled lugs, complications, etc while I am sitting at my desk procrastinating instead of working.

thanks- that guy sort of has a stumpy tentacle, did you do that on purpose or was that just a coincidence?

to any Chicago people out there or those familiar with the city, can you recommend any good dealers/shops in the area? or some to avoid? I am in the western suburbs and work downtown in the loop. I've walked by CD Peacock in Oak Brook before but have never stopped in, I believe they are a Rolex AD. I'm not at a point where I have the cash to throw at a Rolex at the moment but would enjoy checking them out... although it sounds like the steel sports models are a pain in the ass to buy or even see at the moment anyway.

The Oak Brook CD Peacock is a great store. They are a big AD for a bunch of brands. Rolex, IWC, Patek, Cartier, Tudor( I think now), Panerai (on its way out) and some others. A good one to visit. My office is in Villa Park and I go into the Oak Brook CD Peacock all the time. Razny Jewelers in Addison is also an AD for Rolex and Tudor and a few others. There are to many to count if you are in the Loop for work. A bunch down there. All really cool visits.

I will definitely stop in there next time I am in Oak Brook! I am in La Grange by the way so we are out there often. This sounds stupid when I type it out but I feel hesitant about going in and wasting their time if I am not ready to buy. I just need to get over that and go try some shit on!

it's not much of a "collection" anymore. I really went through a shitload of knives over the past few years and fine tuned things, flipped a lot of them, figured out what I really like and then cut it down to less than 10.

Image

I worked my way up from kershaw to benchmade, spyderco, CRK then to customs.... then I really got into slipjoints for a year or so and went through tons of GEC's and then got in to custom slipjoints... $$$

I finally paired it down to a collection made up of CRK's, a couple production slip joints and one or two customs that I really enjoy. I think keeping the total number under 10 is good for me.

Welcome to DWC!

I think you should steer your collection to higher end Gshocks initially - I just so happen to be selling one soon (coincidence, I’m sure).

I love a good g shock! I just so happen to be wearing one today. I went through a few of them and think I landed on this one for good. Checks all of my boxes.

Tell me more about the pie

Same kind for both breakfast and lunch like a savage or did you at least have a different flavor?
