This is a bit left-field, so bear with me...
To the side of my house, next to the garage, is a patio area wide enough to fit a car, and I was going to install some 6ft high wooden gates.. then I had a thought..
Instead of installing gates, I could install side hung garage doors instead, so they match the doors on the actual garage. (so it would look like a double garage).
I've never seen this before, and googling doesn't help.
Is this doable, or totally stupid?

I like it. Depending on the roof line, or area above your new gate. If you framed it to match that’d be pretty awesome.
Re: Garage door as a gate?
This could work, but garage doors aren't designed to be supported with hinges from the side, so you would need to reinforce them with a perimeter frame and some lateral bracing. This could be done on the back side so that it is hidden from the front. If the doors are small enough, you could use some wood to build the back frame.
