Help needed with potential buyer

Post by manitoujoe » Tue Jan 09, 2018 5:09 pm

Hey gang!

I have a potential buyer on WUS for my Glycine Airman DC-4. Problem is he’s got 0 posts, has asked strange questions and I’m not sure of the best way to protect myself when accepting funds via PayPal and shipping.

I’ve heard nightmare stories here and on WUS so I’m hoping someone can help guide me?

Thanks in advance. Really want to get this sold.

Mark

Tell him since he’s got zero feedback, he’ll need to do wire transfer or you’ll have to find another buyer. That’s abut the only way to be certain.

That said, early on in my purchases with little history, I shared my LinkedIn account with sellers and sent them an e-mail from my work account to help them know who they were dealing with - not the same level of protection, but does help ID who you are really dealing with.

I almost always tell them I only feel comfortable if they pay full amount as friends and family and explain to them why.

Maybe he has hundreds of transactions on eBay though ? Ask for his eBay handle.

If he pays PP f&f then you should be pretty safe.

Hm great ideas. The bank wire thing makes me nervous. Wouldn’t that give him access to my banking info? I’m such a noob right now. lol life before PayPal

For zero posts, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a scan/pic of his drivers license. He can redact the actual license number if he wants. If he's legit, that shouldn't be a problem. Then you can look him up on LinkedIn, etc. to confirm it's an actual person.

Who has 0 posts on WUS - and then immediately wants to buy a watch? Turn around and walk away.

I've had sales to zero or low posters there before that went off without a hitch. I do agree it's a red flag, however.

As mentioned above go the friends and family route. I did do a deal on WUS with someone with 1 or 2 posts, but they had great feedback on a different forum. It went smoothly.

Back in the day, most of my deals were with guys with zero posts.

For a wire payment, I've used a bank account with an online bank that has no minimum balance, no fees, and a very small balance. You can also do an online bank transfer, which is free to both parties and then there's Venmo, which is owned by PayPal and works the same as PayPal f&f without violating their terms of service.

I'd walk away. What sort of strange questions is he asking, BTW?

Some years back, I read about some fraud with some wire transfer transactions.

I do agree.. however, if it were me, and I was new on a site, I'd be "Hi I'm new to this site, but I have 100's posts on this site, and on this site, please go on there and check me out, ask around etc, or google my name etc etc etc"

But someone completely unknown? Never bought a watch online before?

Venmo might be a good option.

He gave me his name, but it's popping up everywhere. So if I need it, the license angle might be good. It's hard to flip a 24-HR watch, even a Glycine. Ugh.

Here are some of the questions. And yes, I *know*. These are weird. Enjoy.

"I’d appreciate if you could answer a few questions before I make the call:

- Where did you first acquire this watch and for how much?
- What made you give up this watch specifically? You did mention thinning out the collection; was there something you found that you weren’t expecting?
- If you could switch this with any Glycine watch for free, what model would you consider? Or any other 24hr watch?"

I opened a (free) savings account with my bank specifically to receive wire transfers. I leave no money in that account and use it for no other purpose. I feel better not sharing my primary checking account number online.

That said, we all freak out about sharing our checking account numbers online, yet have no qualms about writing a personal check (with the acct number printed on it) to somebody.

None of those would raise a flag.

But the only way I'd do a deal with him is if he sent a PO money order. In return, knock a little off the price.

Otherwise, move on.

I tend to agree. Regardless of any precautions I would take, I hope I'm never too desperate to sell a watch to someone who asks dumbass questions like those.

A smart guy who wants a watch? Zero is the best number of WUS posts.
