Karlskrona Antarctic - First Renderings

Post by Bradystraps » Sun Oct 08, 2017 8:56 am

I have always wanted to create an homage to one of my absolute favorite divers of all time, The Citizen Mission Antarctica. The MA is an iconic piece that offered a rugged case with great specs that could be worn in all types of environments. I love the look and feel of the watch and it has what I think is one of the best cases ever produced. Light and comfortable, this watch has great lume and serves as one of the best beaters ever made.

I am hoping to bring a similar offering to reality. The Antarctic watches will be Titanium and offered in both quartz and automatic versions. Full specifications coming soon.

Love these. What are you thinking on size? 42 or 43?

I was leaning towards 43mm but I am open to input.

I’m just liking at size of case and the crown protectors etc and that 43 might make it feel like a 44.
42 is probably the sweet spot IMO

GMT ........ quartz....... titanium....... restrained sizing...... next thing you know you're going to tell me that the pricing will be reasonably affordable

You have some nerve defying the unwritten rules of micro brand tool watches!

This one is a winner in 41mm case and 13mm or less thickness.

Antarctic = white? Will you have a white dial offering?
It's a beautiful world! Gerald.

i'm with Gera(rl)d, when you name it "Antarctic", white dial is mandatory.

Will definitely consider a white dial down the road.

So... 42 X 48mm and 13mm thickness sound good? I think that configuration would cover most.

This offering is a winner. Great concept. Titanium quartz smaller sized (42-43) in the Citizen mission Antarctica style. Wow.

Looking good Todd. Love that it is Titanium
I’d keep it at 41-42 as I think it’ll wear on the larger side. Good on you keeping the L2L at 48 max. White is a must have for such a watch. Personally I feel it’s a lot of grey surfaces so I’d like to see some contrast in the bezel. Either a balck insert ? Or raised black numerals/markers ?

Look at how quick the latest Obris Morgans sold 200 on preorder with 43mm case and 50mm lug to lug. May not please most DWC crowd but will probably fly out in a flash with 43 by 49-50mm.

Size is not the only thing driving sales for Obris. They could have released a 40 or a 46 and it would have still sold out. They have a following (small in the grand scheme of it) but still a following.

Todd --- Just saw this post. That is a really good looking design, I like everything about it, including the integrated bracelet.

43mm dia x 14mm thick would be the sweet spot for dimensions. It would wear like the rugged watch that I believe you are trying to target. In the smaller 40-42mm size and it would just wear too small for me....dress watch size.

Love the design though. Definitely looking forward to further development on this one.

Regarding the movement... I'd love to offer both quartz and automatic simultaneously. What is everyone's thoughts on which they'd prefer?
I'm such an automatic kinda guy but... this one is just screaming quartz to me.

Any other thoughts and opinions on the design etc. are always welcomed.

I think auto will out sell quartz 70/30. BUT I'll take mine in quartz.

I don't know a lot about which movements are better than others in terms of quartz, but a jeweled high torque movement with a five-year minimum battery life would be awesome.

I agree with you that this would really make the ultimate beater. And a quartz movement would be perfect for that. This piece will sit very pleasantly alongside my 300m quartz tuna.

Regarding the size discussion even though I have generally been gravitating towards 39 mm to 41 mm as my preferred sizing for watches this one at 43mm does not bother me at all because of the titanium construction and 13 mm thickness.

That bezel would look great in bronze.

Agree with the bezel needing black numbers like the one below, but inverted - silver bezel, black numbers. Other than that, I’d be in for 42. Really like this one, Todd. Good luck!

Edit: might not be possible, but a GMT with independently rotating hour hand would be bada$$ for those of us that actually travel across time zones a lot.
