Toxic Tropics?

Post by pbj204 » Fri Sep 29, 2017 1:53 pm

Am I the only one that thinks it would be great if Terry carried some quality Tropic rubbers? I don't think there's any good US source now.

Ofrei was a good source but their shipping kills it. I'd totally dig some ToxicTropics

I tried a Watchgecko tropic. Decent feeling, but dang if it didn't stink like some kind of citrus scented industrial cleaner.

A rubber tropic without a scent (or at least a mild vanilla) would be a great addition!

Damn, I just ordered from them. Hopefully there's a way to reduce the scent. Tropics look great though.

So far, no one has gotten it right, IMHO. Oris oddly came close on the 1965.

I’d love it if someone could reproduce the old Swiss tropic flexibility and texture.

Sorry, Paul. I didn't mean to rain on your parade. Maybe your example will be less scented than mine, or maybe I am just more sensitive to the citrus scent they use.

On the positive side, the strap is soft and flexible - much more so than the Uncle Seiko waffle I tried earlier (which was very stiff and plastic feeling. Maybe true to the original PVC Seiko, but not what I was looking for.)

Looks nice, but only available in 22mm. I wish I could find a 20mm version.

That'd be amazing. I'd absolutely grab one to toss on my Seamaster.

These are nice, but the price is a little steep.

I will ask around. Most of the samples I got in the past felt like hard plastic. So I passed on them.

I believe uncleseiko is working on some over at the seiko forum. Not sure what sizes they come in.

The best one I've had is the Oris but NTH has a very nice one for 25-40$ (20mm). Wish they had a 22 I'd buy one.
Ofrei's sucked.

Does the NTH version have a citrus scent like he Watchgecko version? Curious if they are the same strap sold by different vendors or if they are different.

Offrei's are silicone, so likely to not be as long lasting and also be dust magnets. They are cheap though. I've heard you can find the same model on Amazon for similar prices and without the Offrei minimum order amount.

If Terry could get his current rubber strap maker to knock these out, I'd definitely be a buyer.

No scent on my NTH

Ofrei feels like crap and IS a major magnet for dust and the like.
I got a 20 and 22 some time ago. Gave away the 20 and still have the 22 which I never wear.

Interesting. The NTH and the WatchGecko look almost identical, down to the plain keepers.

The Uncle Seiko sample and the GruppoGamma examples look to have patterned keepers which seem like a nice detail.

Toxic Tropics?

I have a few I bought from an eBay seller years ago. They are NOS. Not a huge fan of them because they are pretty stiff. I'd rather have them on the softer side.

Just got the Watchgecko Tropics. They look and feel nice, but you're right, they have a strong grapefruit scent. It's not too bad, but hopefully it fades over time.

A lot of Chinese made crap out there sold as NOS Tropic. You need to be savvy about getting those marked Swiss made tropic brand. Night and day. Nothing shown above yet compares to what used to be done.
