Traditionally, no. I don't want a completely "by the books" field watch. I prefer drilled lugs myself. Ohh, and my waterproof leather will have my built in springbars as well for quick strap changes.

Exciting news! I am designing a field watch which will be called the Artillerist. Still finalizing the specifications but here are the highlights as of now:

Case size: 41mm / 48mm lug to lug
Case thickness: 12mm
Case material: Brushed or blasted stainless steel, Drilled lug holes
Lug width: 22mm
Movement: Swiss Selitta SW200-1
Water Resistance: 200M
Lume: Karlskrona K3 blend (similar to Nordic Shield lume)
Date window: 6 o'clock position
Crystal: AR coated sapphire
Straps: Nylon Zulu and Karlskrona Ryttare Waterproof Leather with signed buckle

Target price: $395.00 USD

I like where you're going with this, dimensions are pretty reasonable. I'll contradict pretty much everything I've ever said, and suggest rethinking a date window unless it's very unobtrusive.

We've gone over and over what "field watch" means. My two cents suggests a time keeping tool for a guy on the ass end of nowhere. Robust and simple, easy to take care of. Not big or bulky, no heavier than it needs to be, good lume, simple hands that work and are easy to read at a glance? The classic model is a basic Rolex Explorer.

If a 6497 would fit in a 40-41mm case, I'd suggest hand wind. If not, then a reliable auto. Drilled lugs or fixed bars, the idea being if the strap fails, you can replace it with something at hand like a shoe lace or used panties. Screw down crown, 100 meter WR is enough. A long enough strap that it'll go over a jacket sleeve or gloves. A long time ago, I toured the Maritimes on a bike that didn't have a clock. My mental model here is a watch I could have worn outside my rain gear at 70 mph.

Agree 100% with the concept. I wish somebody in the micro world would have the balls* to REALLY think "tool watch" and use a movement similar to the ones in the Tuna, or a super solid solar quartz.
In my opinion, a real modern tool watch supposed to be worn during the apocalypse should have a quartz movement, ideally solar.

*not saying those who don't do it are noobs or posers, just I would love to see someone dare to make it really tool.
2017 automatic "tool" watches give me the same impression that I get when I see the typical "mall soldier" or "mall ninja", the guy who's 380lbs and dressed full tactical and shit.

Bertucci uses quartz and auto movements, solid Titanium cases and fixed lugs, and tritium lume on most. Pretty good Field watches.

GPW Field Watch, Hamilton Field Watches, etc. While a true Field watch may fixed bars or their buyers are looking for them, majority are buying for style, not functionality.

In terms of reliability, shoulderless bars + lug holes is virtually indestructible already.
Quartz vs auto is a different story

This. Shoulderless give you the reliability of fixed bars, without taking away the ability to put a bracelet on the watch if you choose.

I didn't think the name would be an issue whatsoever but I am always open to everyone's input. That's what is so great about this place.

Yeah basically just make a knock off Tudor Ranger and call it an Artellirist or Tankist, I like Tankist better

Little late to the game for tankist.. but he could get out in front with submarinist, balloonist, helicopterist, or if he wanted to get ahead of Yao, make a paradive-ish.

Any one of these would make an equally massive wall of text for the dial.
