Getting a new SUV

I'm in the market for a new SUV and am thinking of going for a midsize, but not too expensive as I plan on beating the hell out of it. I am thinking of the $40 -$50K range, with seating for 5 and some cargo room for my junk...maybe a roof rack if I want to throw the Thule on top for a ski trip.

I have just started and was just going to get a RDX. We already own an MDX (our 3rd) and have been happy with the reliability of their SUVs...but was also thinking of looking at other brands. That brings me to this...I haven't looked around much and haven't explored all of the possible options, so I wanted to ask you fellas.

Any thoughts?

When you say "beat the hell out of it", I think you might want to consider a truck-based SUV. The only one that comes to mind in the mid-size you are looking at is the Toyota 4Runner.

That said, I do like the MDX. Friends who own them report very good reliability.

There's nothing better than the 4runner that meets your criteria. Maybe get a land cruiser. A G wagon

My brother-in-law has one that he has piled the miles on. I think it has nearly 200K on it and his mechanic believes it ought to last another 100K (or until one of his teenage sons wrecks it).

If looking for used get a pre-certified SUV. Have bought two Lexus cars that way. Someone else takes the big depreciation, and they're usually warranted for 3 years or 36K miles.

I have bought my last 5 cars new, but am open to a year/two old, if very low mileage. I'm looking for something fun to drive and all wheel drive.

I did a little reading today on certified and it seems that it means something different across the board.

FWIW, a CPO Mercedes SUV will have an unlimited mileage warranty for the remainder of the original four years, plus one more. You can also purchase up to two additional years, also unlimited mileage. That's up to 7 years / unlimited mileage, starting at the original sale date. Grab a one year lease return and you're solid.

My wife just got a Audi Q7 after 2 MDXs. The Q7 is a step up in price but it's awesome.

We got an escalade last week after bailing on the model x. Reliable, cheap to fix, the platform is routinely used for commercial vehicles, etc. I think a prior generation for well under your budget will last you forever and be a great value. We looked at all sorts of cars before buying, from Range Rover to cayenne to another g wagen to the Lexus gx/lx to q7. The escalade was simply the best value and most practical one to own

^^^Couldn't agree more with the above. I've put 215K on my current GMC Yukon, which is essentially the same platform. Best and most dependable vehicle I've ever owned.

I've got a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I've been extremely pleased so far. Lots of models/options to choose from including V6, V8, and V6 Diesel engine choices.

How about a truck? You could get a used ram 1500 or f-150. Easy to fit 5 if you get the crew cab, plenty of storage in the rear, and generally you won't take a beating on the resale should you choose to sell it.
