Suggestions Please- under 1K for Eagle Scout Gift
My wife's uncle just called me for suggestions on a gift for his son who is getting his Eagle Scout award on the July 9th. I blanked a bit, so any help would be welcome.
His Dad would like to keep the budget at 500, but his Mom would push it to 1k. So anything in that 500-1k range (less is fine, too). They plan on engraving the watch, and it sounds like they would like something he'd wear for awhile. I said I'd get him some options by the end of day.
He's 19, attending college, and boats a lot.
Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Longines and Oris divers. Any specific watches? Others? Any good deals/vendors out there now? I'm thinking bracelet is best, but it doesn't hurt to show them all options. Open to divers, dress, whatever at this point
Finally, this is for July 9th, so fast ship is needed so they can get engraved....
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Thank you!

Eagle Scout + Boating = how about a nice custom engraved knife that would get a lot of use?
just as an alternative to a watch (and to muddy the waters, sorry 'bout that)

I also immediately thought of a knife. How about an engraved Sebenza?

For boating go with something that has a sheepsfoot blade. Spyderco line of knives has some very nice ones that are used by a good majority of professional sailors.Chocodove wrote:I also immediately thought of a knife. How about an engraved Sebenza?
Live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse.

I third the idea of an engraved knife. However, I'd look for one with a precipitation hardened steel like H1. Spyderco has a line of these knives although they're not exactly a graduation type gift

I thought of a knife, too (i asked). But they are looking for a watch that he'll wear.

In that case the Oris is a great choice but would push against and possibly over the $1K limit.YOHOHO wrote:I thought of a knife, too (i asked). But they are looking for a watch that he'll wear.
The Alpina Seastrong (just released is just over $1K at Jomashop
Maybe a Weiss field watch?
There are plenty of choices from Hamilton.
Or maybe if he can wait a while a MKII Hawkinge

If it must be a watch how about a shogun? Should certainly stand up to the abuse on a boat, light, easy to service, and the diashield should help keep it looking nice. Earning his Eagle rank is quite the accomplishment. If he was into hiking, I'd suggest a walking stick. My parents had one made out of cactus with an eagle on top similar to this (different top though)

i was also thinking auto hamilton.
aegir, resco, the baltic shield, scurfa and marathon are all somewhat timeless looking options in that price range

When I earned my Eagle I think I got taken out to dinner. Times sure have changed!
My wise guy answer is to get him a compass with a mirror so he can see who is lost. My more honest answer is a nice knife. Unless he is a watch enthusiast, a watch nicer than say, a Seiko SKX007, will probably be lost on him.
I'm guessing he just turned 19 as I think the upper age limit on Eagle is 18, so you can say it is a Birthday and Eagle gift.

This or Samurai. Diashield on Samurai is a big plus, but Quartz might be a better choice if it isn't guaranteed he will wear it every day.toxicavenger wrote:Certina quartz Ti
Seiko has new solar Ti divers that are in $500 price range but might be tough to get in by early July unless they are at the AD's already.
Sorry to Nishant, but the Oris locks him into the factory bracelet and rubber so not very versatile.

If your cap is $1k, you could get an engraved Sebenza and a nice Seiko or Casio. Maybe a Pathfinder?

These are generally given as graduation gifts at the US Merchant Marine Acadamey by the parents. Nice knives and hold up well in a marine environment.r.palace wrote:I third the idea of an engraved knife. However, I'd look for one with a precipitation hardened steel like H1. I meant aesthetically they're not a CRK, GEC, etcCaptdave wrote:These are generally given as graduation gifts at the US Merchant Marine Acadamey by the parents. I say a Victorinox of some kind. A divemaster would be a good option.

This or a Marathon TSAR/GSAR (not sure if there's space for an engraving though) & the aforementioned Spyderco.toxicavenger wrote:Certina quartz Ti
I would include with the Marathon a Toxic springbar tool and a couple of ToxicNatos.

He's 18+ and obviously disciplined and self reliant. Get him an AR-15. (Colt 6920).
Failing that, what about an SAS diver at that price point?
