I don't know about your local locations, but there has probably been (by my scientific eyeballing while walking/driving by) a 90% decline in patronage at Chipotle in my areas. It used to be packed and out the door anywhere close to meal time. Now, it's a ghost town, with probably 3-5 groups in the restaurant in the middle of lunch or dinner.

I know I haven't eaten there in months.

Ate there once, wasn't impressed and didn't understand the hype. Oh well.

They are, which is a shame because they ran fundraisers for my daughters school and they matched everything sold. :angryfire:

Same here. Their Denver location, right down the street from their headquarters used to have lines everyday winding throughout the restaurant. Now they are only ever 10 people deep at most.

Always wait for the guy to put on the first scoop before ordering double meat on your burrito.

I've been giving this a lot of thought. I feel bad for those who fell ill but I feel a little bad for chipotle.

Their concept is exactly what people wanted and what most local joints are doing anyway through their local purveyors, farmers markets, etc.

You'll likely never hear about how your favorite local place killed someone because the kale they bought from Old McDoland at the local hipster farmers market was tainted with salmonella. Instead they'll just be closed and tied-up in court for awhile.

Chipotle was essentially doing this but on a massive scale which means they were playing Russian roulette for awhile given their volume. In hindsight they should of had commissary kitchens testing product, but quality would have suffered, and prices would have increased.

Eating food always comes with risk.

I agree 100%.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but I seriously wondered how they were pulling it off with the labor they employed. And with what training?

I never ate at one but was curious enough a few years ago to go into one and just watch for awhile. I walked away with more questions than I did before my visit.

I haven't eaten it in about 7 years since I consequently got a flu/GI bug the same night I ate it- at a Super Bowl party.

But my wife loves it. Being 8 months pregnant she asked me to get her some a few weeks ago when I was driving home. I did- but it was just for her except some chips. There were not many people in there at all.

It's gonna pass like everything else. Chipotle should consider this a temporary recession.

Today it was announced Chipotle is pledging up to $10M for their growers to advance food safety. IMHO, it's a diversion and passing the buck. They should have had something as standard operating procedure in place long before this.

Seems they thought blowing through product and FIFO was all that was needed. Who knows if they can fully recover from this one. They haven't even scratched the surface on how much this is going to end up costing them: New SOPs, HACCP, Commissary/Labs, QC/Health audits internally and externally, training programs, maybe hiring another body at each store

It is inconceivable to me they did not have HACCP in place. But maybe they didn't.

Who knows.

But we still don't know what was contaminated which I find strange. It could because so much product is cross-utilized in each item that they can't narrow it down. But on that note I also wonder why more weren't sick. They only swap containers when they're getting low so I imagine what was in that particular pan was completely sold and consumed.

Chipotle for dinner and Blue Bell for dessert. Like Russian roulette.
