Mini Review: Poseidon Professional 500

Post by namor » Sat Apr 04, 2020 2:52 pm

[I'm not sure if Poseidon branding a watch is technically a micro, but its definitely not a major, so here goes.]

This is the Poseidon Professional 500 dive watch. It is a 500M watch, with a steel case, screw down back, screwin crown, sapphire crystal, unidirectional bezel, a a quartz movement. Its about 44mm in diameter, with a 40mm bezel, and 44mm lug to lug. The lugs are shrouded and 22mm.

I believe the quartz is a Seiko movement, and its keeping exact time vs NIST. The second hand hits the marks spot on too. The case is designed like a shrouded Tuna, except that the "shroud" is an integral part of the case. In this regard it reminds me of the ill-fated Tudor Hydronaut. The lugs are also shrouded, giving it something of a pillow case look. Since the lug to lug is roughly the same as the diameter, it wears very comfortably on the wrist. Its barely 12mm in height, so it sits easily too. The flat sapphire sits even with the bezel insert, but below the bezel itself, so it is protected from at least casual hits. The bezel teeth are cut deep and sharp, and makes turning it very easy and sure. The SLN lume is Seiko quality, and it glows all night long. There is a knurled crown at 4, protected by subtle guards, that screws in smoothly and securely. The sweep has a lumed lollypop end, and in a nice touch, is red for easy reading. The black-on-white date window is at 3, with no cyclops but it is readable even with my old eyes. Otherwise, the dial is pretty clean with the Poseidon logo at 12 and "Professional 500" at 6. I have the black dial version, but I believe there is a yellow dial version too. I'm a big Poseidon fan, so the logo and name is a plus to me.

Bottom line - this is a solid purpose built dive watch with everything you need and nothing extra. I haven't owned it long enough to dive with it, but it seems to be all there. They are rarely listed, though, and so it may be hard to find one. A great 'grab and go' if you do come across it.

I think this shared the same design as the Bomb Frog. Super cool piece. Thanks for the review Seth!

That’s a great looking watch. I believe a few companies used the same case.

Yeah, really terrific review Seth ! :) It sounds like Poseidon really knows
watches, and maybe more importantly fans of watches, like yourself. I mean
from the fit, and finish, and comfort on the wrist, to the bezel quality, and
easy to read dial, these seem to hit on all cylinders ! ..Definitely is a great
grab, and go, but much much more too by the sound of it. Seriously, just the
logo is worth the price of admission. Such a cool watch, and review !!! 8-) 8-)
Thanks a lot for doing it !

Thanks for that, Seth - cool piece!

We dive Poseidon Xtreme regulators for very cold water diving.

I’ve been on a couple of teams that tested regulators in 28 degree water while attempting to get the regulators to lock up and they all failed - except for the Poseidons; we could not break the damn things... 👍🏼

Very nice. I owned either the yellow version or a very similar equivalent.

You guys are making me regret selling mine. Looked up some pictures and I definitely owned the yellow version.
