This may be a dumb question, but is there a technical reason the date on this (and other) dials must be a 4:22 and not squarely centered with the 4:00 marker?

If it were centered and the date window was chrome lined, it would visually take the place of the missing applied indice. Being a few minutes south of centered actually draws my eye to it and highlights the lack of symmetry.

My SWAG is the date window must be located precisely there due to the date change gear engagement. There are likely only certain places on a dial that the date will change and be centered within the window. You would have to completely modify the date wheel gear train to make a window centered on 4 work.

Just curious.

I’m not a WIS so I can’t answer the technical question but agree 100% about symmetry

The more I think about it, I think it must have to do with the date wheel location, date wheel gear train, and dial diameter.

Looking at this ETA movement and imagining it under the dial of the Bernhardt, I'm guessing that to get the date centered in the window, the window had to be at that location (or you would have to have custom date wheels printed with special spacing.

I'll leave the watch designing to the experts, but with this style dial (which I like), I think the date works best at 6. Something like this:

ImageA better visual for what I'm thinking is (and please excuse my crap graphics - just trying to think about why this 4:20 date window seems to be so prominent):

This date window will not work at 4

You will be between dates without custom printing and spacing of numbers.

This date location will work with a standard date wheel

^^^ Yup, that's it. If they were serious about the design symmetry, they could get a date wheel printed that would align at 4:00, but I'm guessing that is more than most brands want to invest.

Anywhere near 4:00 just looks wrong to me (poor symmetry), but I do like a 6:00 placement.

What is interesting (at least for me) is Berhardt takes the time to modify the ETA2836-2 to function as a GMT (modify the day mechanism into a GMT hand), but doesn't take the time to address the date location.

Maybe they like the lack of symmetry or it just bothers me more than most?

If there must be a date window it belongs at 3 or 6.

I bet most of their clientele don't care. The wis crowd is not huge and not the biggest buyers imo.

Hey cool, hadn't seen this Terry ! :) It's funny how just changing the font, or even
a logo on a watch can transform things. It's seems so simple, but it really changes the
whole personality.

Actually didn't have a problem with the old way they wrote Bernhardt. Maybe every
once in a while they will create a special, or limited edition with the original font
in the future. Now you have the older Bernhardts out there will the old writing,
and then the new versions on the way. Neat stuff !

Appreciate the news sir. Thanks once again !!!

Thanks Terry- I love it so far and $364 shipped for this is a no brainer. The Miyota 9015 movement is running +7 after day 1. We will see how it settles in but totally acceptable to me at this price point.
