Monta price drop

It looks like they are moving to ETA movements now. But I don't understand how they can do such a big price drop with just a movement swap. On wus a thread said they will drop their prices around 50%.

So, the $3,500 diver is now going to be $1,750?
I kinda sorta like their designs (but then consider the source - I'm the guy who, generally speaking, like anything with sword hands in a Rolex style case), but I'd still be hesitant on pulling the trigger on any new micro watch priced at close to $2K.
Quick edit - just checked and their dive watch is still listed at $3,500.

I quite like the Skyquest but wouldn't consider it at anywhere near that price.
And isn't a used Solo just a bit more than the Triumph?

I like their diver minus the chamfers on the inside of the lugs. $3750 - that can't be right?

I was told they dropped the price on the other two not the diver. I can't go to their website from work to check since it is blocked.

$999.99 seems like a more fitting price point. It's basically a pretty nice throw away watch. Think you're going to be able to buy a crown or bezel for one of these in 10 years? No - me neither.

Even if it's amazing in person the lack of brand and unknown future support makes it a bad decision (IMHO).

I actually like the original OceanKing. The size is right, quality looks high and the Eterna movement adds interest. I really like the crown as well. That said, $3,550 is a non-starter.
This retailer is discounting it a bit more, but not enough.

This makes me wish Tudor made a thinner 40 mm Pelagos.

A 200m stainless pelagos at 40mm would be an AWESOME watch. The 79190 was a great Tudor and it's insane they don't have anything equal now.

Basically, humans are getting larger and bigger (fatter too, I understand that) and things around us are growing in size. New Honda Civic is bigger than 80's Accord, new BMW 3-er is larger than 5/7 series from early 80's. New Seadweller is 43mm, Omega divers are 42-45-46mm, etc.
Thanks to IG, Ho Dinkee and the other "analog calibers" or whatever those websites are called referring to manual transmission that very few people still know how to drive there's a brief reverse to smaller watches under the flags of "vintage" hysteria. But the shoe has to fit, very soon if not already 40mm will be an unpopular size and 42-43 is the new 39-40.
Typing this gibberish during a conference call at work, so I hope I made sense what I was trying to say. I personally have nothing against smaller watches but they just don't fit

Yet objectively small vintage Rolex models are the hottest thing going in watches. There's clearly bimodal demand for watches. Lots of people want that 43mm Sub Dweller and lots of people want a smaller wearing option. We need more options. Bigger and smaller.

Agreed! Omega showed they can do two sizes Planet Ocean. More companies could do the same. I for instance would love a SubC ND in 42-43 mm with proper lugs

i think there's been a pull back to smaller watches more recently. 40-42mm seem to be more common and the 44-47 has been more balanced with the smaller watches. in particular the 47s.
yes, people are getting larger, but that's comparing to the 33-35mm world of the 50s-60s to the overwhelmingly 44+mm world that was happening 5 years ago (or so it seemed to someone like me who just can't pull most of that off). 40-42 is where the pendulum swings back. i think the industry has a better balance right now than 5 years ago and i see a lot more options in the mid size range.
but i agree, omega has done one of the better jobs of covering both mid and large ranges (and sometimes small at the same time).

I think Jacob said it best by calling this watch market segment "throwaway watches". Maybe that is a bit harsh, but these aren't "heirloom" watches, but rather watches sold to a very narrow segment of potential buyers who are usually fickle and are likely to flip the watch when they tire of it.
What's a slightly used Monta Ocean King going to be worth on the secondary market? I've got to think you would take an absolute beating on trying to sell it.
So if it isn't going to be someone's heirloom watch, and it certainly isn't a "prestige" watch, and you'd probably lose 40% or more in resale, what good is it?
I'll take a Black Bay Black every day over the Ocean King. If I decide I don't like it, I know it will retain its value and if it ever needs repair, I know it can be serviced.
I just think Monta completely miss-read the market.

Art you're way out in left field with your analogy.
I know many people who want Tudor to make something like their 79090 sub. Not everyone wants a 44mm plus watch. I've seen your massive hairy wrist so I can understand your point. But Jacob has a wrist that looks like a close up of my semi soft.
Variety.
As for the brand of that started this thread, all I have to say is "lol".
