New Prospex Shogun
New Prospex Shogun
Hey guys!
Just picked this up from Matt(cantwin, who got it from Wu- thanks again dude!), and I. AM. Loving this!! I had the older Shogun before it was Prospex branded and the “Automatic” font changed from cursive to standard and the “SCUBA” script removed, and I have to say that I like this one more.
The bezel turns easily and the 120 clicks are a subtle tic-tick, with every other click just noticeably louder and more definitive than the first. The cut and angles of the case are great- this is something that I have really come to appreciate about my watches over the past couple of years, and of course the holes in the outer case really make swapping out straps a cinch. There will never be any worries about scratches on the back of the lugs; not that I have ever had any issues with that, but things happen. And of course, the icing on the cake about this one is that it is Titanium. I literally forget that I’m wearing the watch- it is THAT light.
The movement winds very easily with no resistance, and the crown is easy to screw down without having to search for the catch where it engages and locks down, like I have experienced with other Seiko models. The lime on the dial is very nice, and of course the dial itself is simple, legible and uncluttered, unlike other pieces out there today. I am not much of a bracelet wearer, so I don’t know that I’ll mount this on the watch. Per my usual SOP, I put an Isofrane on it, and it is like they were made for one another!
My only real gripe, complaint or undecided piece about it is the hands, or really the hour hand. It is too large and almost seems out of place, so I may have this swapped out at some point. Thoughts on that...??
All in all, I think that I’m happier with this watch more so than any piece in my collection, save the 2200.50 Planet Ocean XL that I picked up from Hoppy in his moment of weakness; don’t think I’ll ever get rid of that one. This one sure feels like a keeper too!

Enjoy!
Re: New Prospex Shogun
I’d leave the hands unless you can find OEM hands that match the lume. Aftermarket hands rarely match.
Personally, I like the Shogun hands.

Shogun is a GREAT watch. Love it!
Re: New Prospex Shogun
It’s a nice feeling when a watch just “feels right” so I’m glad you have that again with the Shogun. I was an early and enthusiastic fan of that model and owned several. I love it too.
As for those hands.....give it time. I initially wanted to swap them out, but eventually came to quite like them. I predict you’ll feel the same.
Enjoy!

Great watch and people either appreciate them or not. I've had mine since 2015 and it was the first watch I lusted after when I got into watches the year before.
If you don't have gorilla wrists you may want to give the Crafter Blue fitted rubber a try. Absolutely love it. I've got pics if interested.

Glad you like this version. I miss the cursive script though. Same on the Sumo.

They're "Monster" hands, aren't they? I like the way the look, especially when they line up with one another.

Re: New Prospex Shogun
try a Uncle Seiko GL rubber strap on the Shogun. It fits the case a little better. Not as thick as the ISO or maybe a bc295

Cheap thrills, Barton black and gray canvas.
New Prospex Shogun
I always had a dream of putting mm300
Hands on a shogun. I purchased the hands years ago and never got a shogun. Really wish I just did it so I can stop thinking about it.
Personally, I hate the monster hands.

Still have the hands?
Re: New Prospex Shogun
Congratulations. The Shogun is one of those watches that is mostly right, nice and well made.
Personally there are a couple of options for the hands, in my opinion. My first option would be the hands of the Seiko Sumo, the reason is that the shape in my opinion, works best with the markers of the dial and they are high quality enough and the lume is high quality that should match the markers.
The next option as mentioned above, are the MM300 hands, however in my opinion these are too short. They are made for the MM300 that has a chapter ring with the minute markers that are closer to the center of the dial and so they works with that but any other watch, they are too short. That's my thought anyway, some people don't care and find them good enough.
The only other ones that might work are the ones from the 50th Anniversary Sumo SBDC027 although they might be a little skinny for the markers, but they are good quality and good enough lume to match, probably.
Other then that there have been some Seiko Spirit or Tuna with good quality hands, and lume that could match.
But in looking at the watch overall, I think that the current hands match the watch the best. The shape of some of the markers and especially the one at 12 are very similar to the hour hand.

MM300 hands won’t be an exact match for lume color in daylight. That’s why I never did it.
Just learn to like the stock hands, they tie in with bezel and dial markers better anyway.
