Impulse Buy on a JDM

Post by namor » Sat Nov 23, 2019 12:43 pm

I saw this SBEP001 digital solar tuna, which I believe is only offered in Japan. It’s 200M wr, and multi function - all pretty common sort of stuff. I do like the old school friction divers bezel, instead of the nearly universally used unidirectional ones most pieces have.

But the thing that caught my eye on it is the customized shroud - it’s completely engraved with Japanese wording that comes from a temple in Japan.

Makes it unique especially here in the USA

Damn that shroud is cool. I wear mine to work all the time. I like not having to worry about scratching the plastic shroud.

I’ve never seen that before. That is extraordinarily cool. I think it’s a great impulse buy

Sweet, the Kanji on the shroud is awesome, very unique! Good pick up. Enjoy.

Does anyone read Japanese here? I'd post 360 degrees of the shroud if somebody knew to translate the prayers...

Not true. It says “Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself.”

Wife can read old Japanese that not all Japanese can (one of her studies at U-Tokyo) and she sees “aging” “nothing” “special place” “death” almost like its saying no death but go to special place. But some of the characters are missing key strokes which doesn’t make sense to her.

Wish I had more answers. It’s a cool shroud. I want one.

Too funny. It reminds me of those kids who get kanji character tattoos thinking they say “peace” or “strength” when the actually spell out menu items.

It is still a cool looking shroud.

I met the guy who did it - he was a Japanese national who was raised in a Buddhist temple. His English was not very good, but I'd bet heavily that his Japanese was perfect.

I was informed today that the engraving on the shroud is "the most frequently quoted Buddhist sutra", the Two Truths doctrine. It says in part, "Form is empty, emptiness is form." which reflects the view that reality relies on the perfection of wisdom. I can't read Japanese, but I believe this to be accurate.
