Their inability to handle real time stock is further proof that their other limited editions are likely presold, as those all sold out within a couple minutes without much drama and with much less availability.

Hype isn’t luck; it’s hard work. :)
They have been sold with drama at all. That is why I have been saying since the beginning they are doing back door deals. Shitty for sure.

Their other LE's were also a good deal more expensive, which means the pool of purchasers was a lot smaller. This is an affordable, cool looking (IMHO) watch with a large cult following. So there are bound to be more hurt feelings, particularly when those who missed out on the purchase see buyers turning around and listing them at almost double the MSRP.

That said, I doubt this will do much damage to either Hodinkee or Seiko.

Maybe I've just never learned it properly, but I just can't seem to get past compass points on a watch with no compass... It just bugs the hell out of me for some reason, even though admittedly here they are not too obtrusive.

You’re likely not to hit a land marker unless you’re lucky or unless that point is really obvious. You can do the same with any analog watch really (find north) and it's super easy with a gmt hand set properly. The other thing is the rotating bezel on the alpinist is relatively free moving so if you use it to mark time you have to be cautious of hitting the bezel adjustment crown because it will spin the internal bezel.

Man, side by side, the blue looks SO much better than the green/gold.

I got mine in today. I'll put up a more dedicated post with some quality photos and what not at some point this week.

As for now, I'll say that it's exactly what you'd expect out of a mid-range Seiko. It's not mind-blowing, but the blue does look good. The stock strap is shit though, removed it immediately.

I know a lot of folks here aren't DavidSW fans. I've never had a bad experience with him, but he has one of these listed for $1,375. He can obviously do whatever he wants but, like I said above, it's such a dick move.

I have mine on a strap code bracelet. I like it a lot. The blue transitions from a deep blue sunburst to black depending on the angle. I don't think bad bang for the buck (of course would have loved around 400), and to me so much better than the green in pics.

My only complaint so far is the compass crown moves by just looking at it. Ig could have been tighter.

It seems to be running around +2-3 seconds a day. Not bad.

All in all, not a bad version to grab and go.

Even he snagged one to quickly resell, or I suppose someone could have traded it into him for a purchase. Guess when Hodinkee is involved, even non Seikoholics jump on board.

Hah I noticed this as well, I went to wind the watch and somehow turned the compass bezel. It's a light turn.

If there's money to be made, these guys dive in. It's a riskless flip for them - they can always sell at retail.

Looks really good. I think it would also look great on the jubilee.

I liked the green one. It just needs the right strap. The blue is better, though.

Edit - nevermind, I should have read through the thread, apparently it's long sold out. Oh well. I like it but not at the flipper price.

At the price you're better off with a Citizen Nighthawk in blue... The Costco version of the watch at <$300 is an absolute gem.

Buddy came to me asking for a watch for his soon-to-be Bear Scout on the path to Eagle. We talked about the Alpinist. He didn't have a Costco acct so I bought one for him, plus the sunburst blue is as perfect as the bluesy in terms of how it reacts in light (no joke - prior 116613 owner here) vs. the somewhat muted color of this watch in certain light.

The rotating internal bezel is all the same for compass reckoning if you remember 360 degrees and can actually draw a circle  ...Plus you get the perfect grab-and-go quartz with added slide rule if you choose to figure out how it works, which is an added fun wis undertaking. Did I mention it has a 24hr/GMT hand so if you really wanted to get true north in a flash you could pending the 24hr hand set right? It's just win-win all the way. Plus the knurled bits are damn nice.

The green is nice but too much for what it is now. I hated the muted olive color once it arrived and flipped the moment I received. The emerald green seen in most pics has to be captured in just the right light whereas the blue Nighthawk is bluesy in any indirect or direct sunlight.

Cliff notes... Blue Nighthawk > Blue Alpinist

I always like the green Alpinist, but the Blue version is something special... BUT
