First-Ever Grand Seiko Quartz GMTs

Image

Grand Seiko just released their very first quartz GMT watches! These are part of GS' 25 year anniversary celebration of their legendary 9F movement, and as you would expect, are based on the super-accurate 9F quartz that you all know and love.

Image

The first of these is a very special limited edition of 800 pieces, the SBGN001, with yellow accents. The SBGN001 features a repeating quartz crystal-styled motif on the dial with a discreet 9F and 25 hidden therein as a subtle reminder of the 25th anniversary.

Image

Although all three of these watches feature the new 9F86 movement, if you haven't already noticed the star on the dial, this LE is rated for an amazing 5 seconds per year.

Image

The first of the regular production models is this SBGN003 in black with bright orange accents. Like the other two watches, you'll notice that the bottom half of the chapter ring is in a different color than the top to set apart day and night hours.

Image

As is usually the case with well-made GMT watches, the new 9F86 movement features an independent hour hand, commonly considered a crucial component of a "true" GMT complication.

Image

Finally, we look at my favorite of the three, the regular production SBGN005, which features a blue dial and red accents.

Image

Despite the sporty look of all three models, GS has stayed fairly conservative in terms of size, with 39mm cases, 12.1mm thick.

Stick around as we determine the US pricing and timeline for availability!

Best Seiko models to come out in a long time.
Some see too much of an omega/Rolex copy/paste but in my opinion the result is nothing short of fantastic.
I may have to get one if the price is anywhere close to reasonable, the issue being I like the LE the most.

These are really nice and the size is fantastic. Seiko's automatic watches seem to all be crazy thick, but it is nice to see them going thin with these Quartz models. Love them.

With the 40mm Explorer ii prices still representing one of the best value's in the Rolex world, you they do compare well on size and pricing. Obviously the Seiko is more accurate.

Also, just the ability to adjust the hour hand independently on a HAQ is super useful for different TZs and DST. Otherwise, your watch could be sufficiently accurate for a decade, but if you have to set the time twice a year (or more) anyway, it may not make a big difference.

^^^ this

The only thing I would change in my GS Quartz SBGX065 is that it lacks the independently adjustable hour hand

It's almost worth it just to get it 4 months ahead of time, not to mention the 5spy movement.

At those prices, I probably (definitely) stick with the hi-beat GMT.

Hi-beat is beautiful but it’s twice the price.

I think these are going to be a homerun.

If I were a commercial pilot or still a door kicker I’d get one in a NY minute. I might try for one but I fear it’s too good and my other watches might get neglected. I’m lazy and I remember this happening with my X33. So much cool, so accurate, so convenient.

Independent hour hand and you’d never have to hack the movement. Set it once a year if you really want. Or don’t.

That’s steep for a quartz if they plan to stick to MSRP
