New 2018 Seiko SPB077/079

Post by hoppyjr » Mon May 21, 2018 10:33 pm

I believe we discussed this in a Basel 2018 thread, but here is a review by Monochrome. “Hands-on – Seiko Prospex Diver 200m SPB077 – Half Modern, Half Vintage, Totally Cool” via @watchvillehttps://api.watchville.co/v2/posts/35185/click

Summary:

44mm x 13mm with 20mm lugs. Essentially a MM300 style in a thinner case. Sapphire crystal, 6R15 motor, protected stainless steel. The 077 is black dial and bezel on bracelet, the 079 is black dial with blue bezel on strap. At least in this review the chapter ring is aligned. The bracelet end links don’t appear to fit great, but I’d be after the 079 on strap. I suspect these will work well on nylon too.

I like it.

More photos, including the 079.

It appears to have Diashield finish.

I like the design. Wish they would make one of these in Ti.

I like this a lot. Unfortunately (or not), I already own a MM300 and an SPB053 so this would overlap those quite a bit.

If I didn't already own the MM300 I'd be all over this one though.

@Todd - if your WTB doesn't work out, this might scratch the MM300 itch.

I wish they'd get rid of the PlayStation symbol.

Looks great but I think 20mm are too narrow on that body

This is why I kind of prefer the stock rubber strap on my SPB053. The rubber flairs to maybe 24mm at the lug ends, meeting the width of the watch case, then tapers to the clasp. The bracelet (which I'm wearing now) doesn't flair.

The SPB053 is only a 42mm case. I would expect this would be even more noticeable with the 44mm case on this watch.

The other thing I noticed is I'd bet this wears larger than the MM300. The MM300 has the wide bezel and smaller dial opening which give the illusion of a smaller watch.

This looks to have a more narrow bezel and larger dial opening. I'm guessing it will wear large.

I still like it though. If I could get one for a similar deal Creation had for the SPB053, I'd pick one up just to try it.

As much as I get infatuated with the occasional micro, or get enamored with a more luxury-level brand, I still believe Seiko makes some of the best dive watches for actual ocean-going divers on the market.

Yes 53 looked good with 20mm, I didn't notice anything odd on any strap including natos. However this one, I am afraid, will be more like Sumo which looks terrible on straps at some angles.

Definitely at 500$ like the Creation deal was I'm still a buyer to take it for a spin.

AT 51mm L2L it might be to long for me. But other than that I like it.

After seeing real world pictures of it something seems bland about it. Possibly close in appearance to the MM300, but missing what made the MM300 feel special.

I think this is more like the Sumo then the MM300, mostly because of the movement and size, nice overall but I would prefer 22mm for a 44mm case. Not really feeling the dial or the hands. But that's personal taste.

I like these a lot, but the size kills it for me. I see a lot of overlap with my 053 as well. Still, if Creation were to blow them out eventually, I'd jump.

I think the sumo comparison is apt.

That endlink fit is indeed atrocious.

I like these, but with a MM and 053 already, just no need.

And still better than the MM300. Other than the SARX and the new Samurai they’re all bad. My SARB has less than premium fit too.

Looks more modern and less crowded than MM300 with a more pleasing bezel to dial ratio . I like it.

That rubber strap has no business on that watch.

I just ordered the blue bezel / black dial (079) from Katsu. Expected to ship 6/10 and was $720 total.

I don’t know why people are down on the end link fit, it doesn’t look that bad. Overall not bad looking but not a replacement for the MM300.

As point out the smaller bezel with a larger dial makes the watch seem to wear larger. Not for me.

That’s the thing with Seiko. All you can hope for is not that bad with bracelet end link fit in most cases.

Is it just me or is the chapter ring off on the first one?
